"The Incident of the Book in the Nighttime", by Vicki Delany

A Sherlock Holmes Bookshop Mystery # 10

A quick look:

Gemma Doyle is in London for her sister’s wedding waiting for her at the hotel is her ex-husband Paul Erikson, a rare book owner who asked her to meet him at his book store the next day, he has a rare book he wish her to see. When Gemma arrives at his store she found him dead in his office.....setting the stage for another saga....

My thoughts:

The author gives us enough contexts setting making it easy to get into it at this point but don’t get baited by the lovely title this story is a cozy classic mystery easy to figure out what’s happening before it happens. No mind-bending or dazzling mystery to figure out just the very observant Gemma, her best friend Jayne and sister Pippa following Paul’s trail of friends, enemies, clients and ex-lovers. To get to the bottom of this mystery the team of sleuths use all their wit before their time in London is over and while doing so they entertained us along the way. Their characterization is the run of the mill nothing special in my books.

I enjoyed this story but plot wise nothing to write home about: simple and easy to follow, nicely written for all to enjoy and being entertained but nothing more.

I received this ARC from the publisher Crooked Lane Books via Netgalley for my thoughts: this is the way I see it.

"Dead West", by Linda L. Richard

The Endings series book #3

This propulsive thriller brims with psychological insights and is one of the most thrilling stories I have read so far this year.

If you are an assassin “don’t get involved with your target” should be at the top of your list. Katie is a contract killer ordered to eliminate Cameron Walker, a rancher in Arizona, who is passionate with wild horses. Arriving at the ranch to carry out her orders she discovers that he is a kind man...she is wondering who might want him dead. She delays long enough to develop of soft spot and a vibe to grow between them. Soon she finds herself trying to protect the man she was sent to kill...But along the way she encounters kidnappers, killers, horse thieves and even human traffickers....

First person narrative got me hooked from the opening page. It is so well-done I was Katie moving in her shoes. The plot is active never stops a moment. Katie is tormented by what she sees and what she supposed to do. The agonizing moments played in my mind along with hers.

The conservation of the wild horses in the Southern States has been a controversial topic for ages. This story brings it at the forefront in an entertaining way whether the author had an agenda or not. The way Ms. Richards penned her story is very well-done, enlightening even a tad political and has giving us along the way a saga full of twists and a little bit of romance to soften things.

I couldn’t put this book down. It definitely gets high marks from me.

My thanks to the publisher for the review copy so that I can share my thoughts with you.

"Two Days in June", by Andrew Cohen

This review was originally published on Auguste 15 ,2015, I though it may be a good idea to share it once more.

John F. Kennedy and the 48 Hours that Made History

This story is a riveting and beautifully written narrative of two consecutive days in the presidency of John F. Kennedy. The days were June 10 and 11, 1963.

There have been many books written about JFK some say more than 40,000 so why another one? There will always be someone digging deeper who will find new tidbits to bring to light in the life of one of the most iconic American president of modern time. In “Two Days in June” Mr. Cohen brings an original perspective by adding a compelling detailed analysis in an eventful chapter in Kennedy’s tenure: his most important speeches that would change the outcome on two important issues: nuclear arms control and American society’s racism. Later to be referred as the iconic Peace Speech and the Civil Rights Act.

Meticulously researched, this book is heavy in information and details on those two days. It tracks the President’s every move and explores mainly the context of the speeches and how it came to be. The tension leading to the public addresses is deftly captured and in proper historical context. We also have a glimpse into many personalities surrounding the president: most importantly, his brother Robert and his speechwriter Ted Sorensen. The President had a myriad of other issues such as: conflict in Vietnam, equal pay for all, his physical condition, his gossipy social life, daily swimming lesson and afternoon nap just to mention a few. All this information comes from rare sources such as documentary, interviews, diaries and official White House logbooks etc. The book doesn’t miss a beat and goes on and on.

It must have taken the author exhausting time to put all this together but also rewarding to see the end result.

Excellent

"Ax Force", by Ty Patterson

Hawke and Stryker, book #2

If you love action packed thrillers you never go wrong with Ty Patterson books. “Ax Force” doesn’t miss any. From the beginning till you reach the final word you will be deep into deadly force. It never ends just like the energizer bunny it goes on and on.

What to expect in a few works:

Samira, a Saudi princess, is on the run. She knows she didn’t have long in Europe. Her father’s guards will track her down eventually, once captured who knows what will happen to her. She needed to reach Ax Hawke and Kael Stryker P.I. referred to her...she made the call.....and the fun began....

My thoughts:

If you read Ty Patterson before you will know his characters have exceptional abilities. They are relentless and go into battle without blinking an eye to save those tasked to protect. They seemed to take battles as a hobby and the bad guys do not intimidate them. Oh yes they jump from buildings, dodge bullets, tackle knifes, bodies and always come out without a scratch or near any, they also love disguises. They manage to wriggle through anything and along the way I couldn’t help shaking my head, totally unbelievable. The twins Megan & Beth from Zeb’s team as always showed up to assist the P.I. and eventually all ends well....

I am a fan of Ty Patterson and his merry men but this one was a bit too much for my taste I really got bored with the never ending action till ¾ in where the story was more subdued and Samira’s life and family came into play then I was interested in pursuing with the thriller to see how things would turn out.

Ty style is consistent and his formula doesn’t change, all his series are action packed that is what he does best.

This latest may not be one of my favourite but I still say Ty knows how to pen a story that would please a lot of thrill seekers.

Thank you Ty keep up the good work.

"The Sunflower House", by Adriana Allegri

A Historical Fiction and Romance novel

1939 in a sleepy German village life will change for ever.

This meticulously researched novel uncovers the notorious Lebensborn Program of Nazi Germany. This is a tale of Allina Straus, a Mischling, who was forced into service as a nurse at a state run baby factory called Hochland Home. There she discovers the horrors of the eugenics program. The sole purpose of these homes was to perpetuate the Aryan population by giving birth to thousands of babies who later would be adopted. Allina must keep her Jewish identity a secret in order to survive and not only save herself but the children in her care.

Through the eyes of Allina this tale is one of determination to resist and survive and is more than the SS Lebensborn program it also is one involving a mother-daughter narrative and family secrets hidden in a box embossed with a swastika. Curiosity and questions arise and a heartbreaking story is told. It opens in the present day when Katrine finds the box of letters belonging to her mother. Allina agrees to tell her everything...

“The Sunflower House” is also a love story. When Allina met Karl, a high-ranking SS with his own secrets they marry and join force to save as many children as they can.

I was pulled in from the very start. Not only this story is a fascinating one it is very active, well-said and well researched. It is also easy to empathize with the main characters; they are so realistic I even forgot they weren’t real. Although this novel is a fiction historical truths are woven in, sadly too real.

I enjoyed reading “The Sunflower House”. The story is very compelling and emotional.

Many thanks to St-Martin’s press and Netgalley for this ARC

"An Insignificant Case", by Phillip Margolin

From a Master of courtroom thriller we have another great legal drama hard to put down. Since discovering this author in 2011 and have been huge fan and his stories have never disappointed me. This latest is a standalone drama.

A little too long intro:

We are introduced to a new attorney, a third rate one who graduated from a third rate law school that couldn’t get a position at any major law firm so he opened his own law firm. Charles Webb takes on cases from dubious friends from his past and court appointed cases. Guido Sabatini, a talented artist and a nut job was his latest appointee to defend. Guido had sold one of his paintings to a restaurant owner and has liberated it along with a flash drive from the safe...At the time the restaurant owner and her partner were under investigation for sex trafficking of minors....With bargaining power knowing that the content of the flash drive threatens very powerful figures, Guido played all his cards but toying with criminals that wanted at any cost to retrieve the flash drive ...even going as far as murder may not be a good strategy.

It didn’t take long for the insignificant Charles to be plunged into more than a simple case defending Guido but into a sensational double murder....

My very long thoughts:

I simply love this story there is so much going on and so many twists and turns to face that I didn’t want to put the book down. I was so captivated by the coming and going and the many characters that crossed the pages many of them had important roles in both Charles and the defendant’s life that I didn’t want to miss a beat. This story definitely captured my attention from the start. Everything was so unpredictable even with some surprising reveals and outcomes. It was hard to predict anything....The characters were exceptional and I enjoyed how they played their parts in this drama. I admit at first I thought Mr. Margolin was rehashing the famous saga of Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell but no to my relief a totally deferent spin and much more exciting.

This is an excellent read I give high score.

My thanks to St-Martin Press and Netgalley for this ARC I am pleased to share my thoughts

"Beyond Reasonable Doubt", by Robert Dugoni

Keera Duggan : A legal thriller book #2

Even if this is the second book in the series I assure you if you pick this one you will not have any trouble getting into it, it stands well by its own.

Keera next case is defending disgraced CEO Jenna Bernstein, a master manipulator accused of murdering her former partner. Jenna is a childhood friend and knows her very well: what Jenna does or goes, trouble is not far behind. Five years earlier Keera’s father had successfully defended Jenna when her company scientist was found dead after he threatened to go public with allegations of corporate fraud..... déjà vu....all over again. Enjoy.

Mr. Dugoni knows how to pen a very complex and exciting plot for our entertainment and how to draw exceptional characters to play roles that will keep us glued by every movement they do. Jenna is really an unlikable character she will never tell the truth when a lie will do. She is a master manipulator that will play you like a fiddle and you will never know it that you been had. On the other hand Keera is smart, witty and tackles her case very strategically like a chess player would do. In legal sagas we need a strong and charming man, Detective Rossi plays the investigating role to a tee and along the way budding romance is in the books. Of course the courtroom shenanigan is top notch...

The story weaves through the mystery smoothly and gives us twists and clues to tease us till the conclusion. What a gripping and captivating story. I simply love Mr. Dugoni style and the stories he gives us...One of my favourite authors...

I received this ARC from the publisher Thomas & Mercer via Netgalley.

"Forgotten Remains", by Melinda Woodhall

A Bailey Flynn FBI Mystery Book #4

While investigating a brutal stabbing FBI Special Agent Bailey Flynn discovers that this crime is linked to the murder of an unidentified woman with connection to a notorious crime cartel. After a search of the crime scene the remains of a local woman who vanished decades ago is also found.....who is this madman and what propels him to kill....

Melinda Woodhall’s books are so addictive I cannot resist getting them. Melinda stories never disappoint and this latest proves once again that she is at the top of the game. She knows how to weave an intense, disturbing and scary story to keep us captivated till the very end. Of course at the forefront is a well plan murder investigation: the hunt for a mad man that was so obsessed by a woman rejection that he killed her or was his action simple revenge...or a cartel payback. What did she do?..... Of course it is for the reader to discover.

Ms. Woodhall keeps focus on her protagonist as she works her case. The action is steady and the pacing is smooth not at all bog down with too unnecessary details. The narrative and dialogue are energetic, keeping a good tempo all though. I also appreciate how the author never forgets to add a few surprises along the way, some twists to derail us and a few new characters to get to know.

Although this latest is part of a series it can be read by its own

I zipped through this book in no time it was that enjoyable.

I received an advance copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntary

"Over the Edge", by Irene Hannon

Undaunted Courage Book #2

Lindsey Barned is the main character in this story and Detective Jack Tucker is a strong secondary player both made this story and exciting read.

The story in a few words:

Lindsey has much going for her and is trying to stay one step ahead of the trauma experienced years ago till the day she thought she was losing her mind and find herself in the middle of another crisis. Not only she is the sole witness in a high-profile murder case but her sanity is in question....Then come into play Detective Jack Tucker to save the day.....

My thoughts:

Ms. Hannon never fails to give us a captivating story that will be hard to put down and will pin us down and on the edge of our seat till we reach the conclusion. This latest adds a tad of psychological aspect by playing with her protagonist’s mind: is Lindsey losing her mind or not? Is she seeing things that were never there?

The very handsome Detective Tucker tries to make sense of the information Lindsey is provided but wants not only to believe her but put an end to the mystery. Doing so, Tucker faces a multitude of twists and counter twists to derail him and us as reader questioning is we may have figured out the right whodunit....Three quarters in I had an idea who it may be...hey I was half right. Of course the two of them working closely together the inevitable happened and both had twinkles in their eyes... awe.....

This story is well-written: clean with a tiny bit of romance, a small amount of faith and lots and lots of suspense.

I received this book from the publisher Revell via Netgalley for my thoughts: this is the way I see it

"Unbalanced", by D.P. Lyle

Jake Longly volume #7

Although this book is part of a series ”Unbalanced” stands very well by its own but once you read one book you will be so captivated you will want more. This series is an immensely entertaining.

In “Unbalanced”, P.I. Jake and Nicole are asked to pick up some papers from a realtor’s business. When they reached the office they found the body of Carl Davis, the realtor, dead from a single gunshot to the head. Who did this? A long list of suspects with motives makes this case a tough one. Working along with Pancake, their associate, they dive into this complex mystery....and discover that Carl’s partner may have skimmed and stashed $300,000 in offshore accounts. The mystery deepens and we find ourselves in the middle of a hunt for the truth.

This is a poignant and funny tale with clever plot twists that will surprise most of us. It is said with a prose that is not only smart but also stylish and is intercepted by snappy dialogue to make us smile. I love the characters; Jake is a true original, smart and funny; Pancake still has his feeding frenzies every time he has a chance. Boy that character loves to eat, drink and smoke. Nicole pulls her own and is essential to the dynamic of the group. With millions at stake and a murder to solve they had to work with the police department and blossoming behind the scenes is an attraction between Pancake and a very attractive police officer...awe.

This was supposed to be a simple task. Five minutes tops....

I simply love this story D.P. Lyle is an author to watch..

I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher Oceanview Publishing for my thoughts: this is the way I see it.

"Dead Man's Time", by Peter James

Roy Grace volume # 9

This story concerns the theft of valuable paintings and other antiques from a house of an elderly woman who died a short time later from the savage beating sustained during the robbery, Aileen McWhirter was 98 years old. Her younger brother Gavin is not only shocked and saddened by this tragedy but is particularly upset about the disappearance of a treasured watch. Detective Superintendent Roy Grace will head the enquiry and finds himself following a murderous race against the clock....and us in another very exciting saga.

The story opens in 1920’s New York when a boy’s mother is killed and the father kidnapped by hard looking men. Then the story quickly moves to Brighton present day with Grace investigating the home invasion. The story unfolds gradually with these two events on both sides of the Atlantic. Back and forth we go. I quite like the way the two different time periods come back together especially at the end. In tandem with the main story but not really a part of it is that someone is after Roy and his family and wants desperately to pull them apart even killed them. Grace nemesis, Amis Smallbone, definitely has a twisted obsession for revenge against our protagonist.

I love how Mr. James is able to takes ideas and make it seem real and believable such as the antiques trade and the psychology of revenge. The cast of characters is great I particularly loved Roy’s relationship with Cleo and their baby Noah which is very well-done in my books. Grace and his team of investigators also work superbly well together. They dig out clues and drive the investigation along while building tension for us to stay riveted till the very end, another plus. Of course the bad guys are interesting and their part give traction even more to this very exciting drama. Oh! Sandy as always has her usual snippet to tease us...what will she do?. Said with short chapters, this gripping tale is a masterful juggling act for the author as well as for Grace.

There is a lot I could mention going on here but I have to leave some for you to discover. This story is so smooth; I zipped through it in no time.

"The More the Terrier", by David Rosenfelt

An Andy Carpenter Novel volume 30

Lawyer Andy Carpenter defends Brian Bremer, a Rutgers student, accused of killing his professor, Prof Steven Rayburn, over the grade on one of his assignments. Apart from the flimsy motive, the evidence is dismayingly strong but despite all the claims against his client Andy will not be deterred in anyways and will not take long for him to unmask the true killer.

Don’t fool yourself with the Christmas book cover this latest can be read at any time and doesn’t need to follow its predecessor to enjoy. So go for it.

I simply love the humoristic tone all through; not funny out loud but the happy grin never left my face. Andy has a dry, sarcastic sense of humour and says anything with wit. His comments really hit the spot in my books. The plot is intriguing as it slowly develops the action gets exciting and we see Andy at his best. Since this is not my first experience with Mr. Rosenfelft style, I can say he has adopted a formula that suits him just fine and he is sticking to it but never forgets to give us a fresh and captivating story to enjoy. We have recurring actors that never stop pleasing the readers: Tara, a golden retriever, Hunter, a pug, Sebastian. A basset hound and the star, Murphy the terrier, Andy’s wife...Laurie also the regular cast have parts to help things move along. Oh yes we have courtroom scenes ... imaginative and entertaining.

This is a fun series. I am looking forward to Andy’s next drama.

I received this ARC from the publisher St-Martin’s Press via NetGalley for my thoughts: this is the way I see it.

"The President's Lawyer", by Lawrence Robbins

A Legal thriller

Attorney Rob Jacobson is asked by his lifelong best friend, the former President of the U.S., to defend him when he is accused of murdering his mistress. Typical of many powerful men, the president has anger issues, some unconventional sexual habits and can be an unpleasant man. As the high-profile case unfurls their past complicate Rob’s efforts and doubts begin to take roots in his head: could his friend be capable of murder?.....politic aside let the trial begin...

The thriller is mostly entertainment it starts at a snail pace and keeps pretty much that tempo till the end. We have intensive background on both the president and the defence attorney and through the story tid-bits of memories show up. By the end we pretty well know these two characters and what makes them tick.

I loved the court shenanigan the back and forth between the defence and the prosecutor was active and well-done, mostly amusing. Following the court proceedings there is a fair amount of edge-of- your seat action with a few surprises tossed in. Rob defends Jack and will prove his innocence in the trial of the century with all one’s might.

This story is written by a man familiar around a courtroom and knows how to pull his readers into the drama. Once in the courtroom I couldn’t put this book aside. The story is narrated mostly by Rob although by the end one unknown character share his voice setting doubts and second guessing who the killer may be..... Wow what a mind-blowing ending.....

This story is a quick read, entertaining and suspenseful.

Thank you Aria Books and Netgalley

"The Last Bridge Across Mostar", by Jeana Kendrick

1992: war-torn Bosnia

This recreation of what life could have been during this grueling time is brought to us through the eyes of American Katrina Winslow who is accused of spying and had to risk her life to protect war orphans caught in the crossfire as the Serbians plot to destroy Mostar. While Croatian Captain Lucien Brezac helps Katerina to save the innocent. Their story is heart-pounding......

What a thrilling novel that tells us the experience in the Balkans. It may be a fiction but the events are historic. This well-written story places us front and center in the conflicts of several Yugoslavian republics. The prose brings to life the terrifying realities of war as Katerina and Lucien navigate the treacherous web of intrigue and violence. Flipping the pages rapidly to see if they will succeed in the quest to save the children and Mostar from destruction couldn’t have been done fast enough. This is one exciting journey that smoothly sails from the beginning till its closing chapter. Embarking on a journey of love and survival with Katerina and Lucien was a chilling experience and a hard one to fathom.

As the story navigates through unknown regions it was quite challenging to follow I wished I had a map in front of me I really couldn’t visualize where I was and who were all those characters one I definitely remember Slobodan Milosevic.. We come across a lot of characters to keep track of, so pay attention or you will have to reread some parts as I did.

The varied reasons for the country’s breakup ranged from the cultural and religious divisions between the ethnic groups this story does an excellent job highlighting this fact. You will come across a lot of praying, I guess being in their shoes I would have perhaps done the same...

No doubt this is a difficult read but so is war. The author tells us that she took liberty in the timing and events for the sake of the narrative and all inaccuracy is on her. After all this book is a fiction not a dissertation and we should take it as such.

My thanks to the publisher for giving me the privilege to review this story.

"Diamond Cut", by Thomas B. Cavanagh

What a gem of a story I has a hard time putting it down. This story is so captivating that time simply past by in a jiffy. In simple words I loved it from the opening page till the final one.

Sandy Corrigan used to be called Diamond when she was an escort spending time in hotel rooms catering to unfaithful men until she escaped and left her old life behind...so she thought. Till one day a girl from her past reappears and asks Sandy to investigate the disappearance of a young girl....Sandy finds herself back into a web of corruption, sex, evil pimps and murder.....and us as reader into one of those exciting drama.

Rooting for Sandy was easy for me. “Go girl you got this” This newly minted P.I. had such a checkered past and used it to her advantage to pursuit her goal and brought us deep into a world that is as corrupt and as dangerous one can imagine. The pacing is rapid till the very end and is written with a solid understanding of human trafficking and the sinister side few have ever seen. This multi-layers story involving a call girl who seeks justice for sex trade workers is one of the best I have read. The story is told from the main character’s perspective and oozes with suspense, it is brilliantly said. From the first page Sandy’s character shines.

“Diamond Cut” focusses on real-life tragedies: human trafficking and contemporary slavery.

Well said- and well done.

I received a copy of this book from the Oceanview Publishing for my thoughts: this is the way I see it.

"Sea to Sky", by R.E. Donald

Hunter Rayne Highway Mystery book #3

Former homicide detective hunter Rayne finds himself the prime suspect in the RCMP’s hunt for “The Chairlift Killer” what a way to spoil his weekend at Whistler and putting a lid on a potential romance. He has no choice but to get involved in order to clear his name.

The believable and interesting plot aids the story to move along well enough to hold attention till the last page. Of course this is a relaxed and cozy read with some rough patches. After all, the entire story is about a murder investigation leaving Hunter relationship on hold. It is easy to get irritated with him and how he interacts with the opposite sex at times but what woman does not love a tall silent type persona, he surely fits the profile. There were odd bits of dialogue and some funny moments to make us smile but not much is really exciting or even captivating.

Although this is a well-written book with pretty good characters “Sea to Sky” brings nothing new to the genre. Hunter now a truck driver will always be a RCMP at heart and “will uphold the right and always get his man” (official motto of the RCMP)

Enjoyable story that works well as a stand-alone.

"One Night in Tehran", by Luana Ehrlich

A Titus Ray Thriller Book #1

This book was a promotion I picked up a few years back and it finally reached the top of my very very long list of kindle books, books I rarely open. This story really caught me by surprise being described as a Christian fiction and focussing on religion and spirituality definitely is not a type of book I would usually go for, then why did I ask for it?

After reading it I can say I enjoy this well-written page turner and did not mind the very small parts pertaining to moments of faith since every religious element were subdued and did not interfere with the pacing and my enjoyment.

What an interesting, intricate and easily believable plot it turned out to be. There is a lot of action and dialogue and the writing is done with excellence. This first novel features intelligence officer Titus Ray, a man trained in lies now on the run from Iranian secret police. A group of Iranian Christians manages to smuggle him out of Iran to eventually end up in the States...there things got out of hand...

By grapping my attention from the beginning and never let go this well thought out plot has given me an exceptional journey filled with suspense. The first person narration, always wins me.

This story is well-written and well- said. Kudo Ms. Ehrlich

"The Elias Network", by Simon Gervais

Caspian Anderson book #1

What a breathless game of cat and mouse this turned out to be and what an exciting read. It opens in Switzerland with Caspian, code name “Elias” a black operative working for the Department of Homeland Security is sent on a killing mission to take out a banker by the name of Leonard Alrich who has deep ties to human trafficking. While Caspian’s girlfriend Liesel an accountant with ties to intelligence agency does her thing. Both love birds have no knowledge that they are working on different sides of the same problem nor do they know of each true identity....The story immerses us in both character’s worlds and along the way gives us a thrilling ride.

When Caspian unearths a conspiracy implicating political figures his mission takes a turn sideways....but for us.... step aside Jason Bourne we are into one of those high-flying story that gives us pulse and heart-pounding action sequences one can wish for. Along the way we are taken through a web of lies and secrets while the sweet and tender moments between Caspian and Liesel give us a well needed break.

This story is a joy to read even if there is a lot to unpack spy vs spy vs spy and back and forth, trust and mistrust at every corner what a way to keep you tuned in. The multiple characters that cross the pages just add to the complexity of this well-said and well-plotted drama.

This is my first experience reading this author and definitely will not be the last.

I received this Arc from Thomas & Mercer via Netgalley for my thoughts: this is the way I see it.

"Suspicious Looking Packages", by Gregory Delaurentis

The Bomb Squad: a Crime Story

New York, 1940 an explosion at the World’s Fair leaves the city on edge. A pipe bomb is found hidden in a red sock… the first device of the sort delivered leaving a strong message to the city. Who is this madman leaving a trail of devastation and brought three detectives at the heart of this nightmarish puzzle.

My thoughts:

I had a terrible time with this story and apologize to the author for not giving him full credits. I was hooked by the cover story I though stepping aside from my usual read would give me another view I rarely step unto. My error.

What I found excellently done is the story has a feel of authenticity: men in the 40’s wore spiffy clothes, fedora hats, had greasy hair and depending of the job status used very colourful languages: picture them holding a cigarette in one hand and whiskey in the other hand chatting with their colleagues and criticizing their wives. We read this page after pages yes once in a while they are sent on a defusing mission… But the development is so slow I actually had to skip pages of never ending day to day life till yes once in a while they have a bomb to diffuse. In my books the exciting parts are too short and lack excitement…. Or was my negativity regarding this story the fact that I skipped too many pages?

This story did not gel for me but you may like it, so don’t judge this story by my feelings give it a go if the hypnosis appeals to you.

"The Seamstress of Auschwitz", by C.K. McAdam

This story spans from 1932 and continues through the British pulling out of Palestine. Sara’s journey immerses us into the horrors of Auschwitz and gives us a glimpse what life was for the displaced persons in camps around Europe. Through the eyes of Sara a lot is said including the obstacles Jews faced in trying to enter Palestine.

All stories during this time are heart-wrenching and compelling this one is no exception. Apart from giving us a large timeline, this version of events recounts and rehashes the same experiences endured by the prisoners. We can find numerous books recounting these events. Nothing new here for those who are a fan and have read books of this era before.

Having said this “The Seamstress of Auschwitz “is nevertheless a very well- written and well-paced story and reading it you won’t get bogged down with unnecessary details. Even if I read many stories covering the camps in the past, I still had a hard time leaving my emotions in check flipping through the pages.

Ms. McAdam’s version is well crafted and powerful but to my eyes did not bring anything new.

"Target Acquired", by Lynette Eason

Synopsis in a few words:

Kenzie King has earned her place as a tactical medic on a SWAT team, a world dominated by all-male. She soon finds out that her arrival has rocked the boat and that not everyone on the team accepts her but she is committed to the job and will have to prove she is as good as they are....She soon finds herself caught between a cold case and a threat to her life.... Cole Garrison, her team leader, will help her navigate while they work to crack the case and find the culprit who is threatening her.

My thoughts:

The story:

The plot gives us a little of everything: lots of intrigue, high-octane action packed with many twists, slow and steady pacing, a bit of poignant moments, some soft romance to spike the narrative and clean humour to make us smile but most of all keeps us interested till the very end. The romance is sweet and clean as expected with Ms. Eason.

We have two timeline criss-crossing each other one is the contemporary story and the other takes us back to 1940. I love the backstory a lot. Eventually they connected and smoothly blend into an entertaining saga.

The characters:

Kenzie King is the image of women who pierced gender inequality with resilience determination and tenacity and faced challenges with courage and strength. By the end she won her colleagues respect and accepted as an equal member of the team.

With his big heart, protective instincts and indomitable spirits Cole Garrison’s dynamic personality brings heartwarming feelings to this inspiring tale.

The SWAT team is a group of tight-knit and courageous bunch of friends (colleagues) looking out for one another. The story is filled with their interactions.

Conclusion:

Well-written and said this story published by Revell is a clean read and meant for everyone.

Although “Target Acquired” is part of a series it stands well on its own.

I received this Arc by the publisher via Netgalley for my thoughts: this is the way I see it.

"Child of Dust", by Yigal Zur

A Dotan Naor Thriller book #3

This thriller takes places in Thailand and in Cambodia and exposes the dark underbelly of paradise. Investigator Dotan Naor takes on the case of Eden, the daughter of a wealthy couple who vanished without a trace from the beaches of Thailand. Join by Iris, the young woman’s mother, they delve into the mystery and soon find out the link to a sinister real estate deal gone wrong and must navigate a treacherous maze of Russian and Israeli mafia, human trafficking and dark business dealings.....

My thoughts:

First of all be warned those sensitive with crude words may be offended, I was not one of them reading about the underworld bring foul language or should I say very colourful language. The story is peppered with them again you have to set your mind that this story navigates in an immoral and corrupt world.

Dealing with tugs, Bratva and Israeli mafia and a multitude of corrupt officials is a rough task to face. Mr. Zur gives Dotan, ex-Mossad, all the tolls needed for the job and he excels doing it. Following Dotan and Iris is very suspenseful they definitely not on a pleasure trip. The tension is high and I couldn’t read fast enough to see how things would turn out. Really I stayed on edge all through: action packed and very tense following these two. This hunt for the missing girl is a pulse-pounding race against time very hard not to be engaged in.

It all started with Eden’s father who had his own agenda being in deep financial trouble owing organized crime a lot of money which he couldn’t pay back. No wonder the mob took Eden and kept her well-hidden till he cough up the cash, if he doesn’t pay up she will be sold. Time is pressing Dotan needs to recues her. Did he succeed?....haha I urge you to get this book.

“Child of Dust” is very well-written to give us a message about official corruption, dark dealings, tourism prostitution and human trafficking especially of selling little girls to rich degenerates. You will meet a lot of characters but no worries they are easy to follow.

I love passing time reading this story, thank you Mr. Zur for the hours of enjoyment.

"The Curator", by John W. Mefford

Jack Whitfield Thriller book #9

I have been following Mr. Mefford for years now and always enjoyed how he spins entertaining stories for us to enjoy. This latest brings our debonair Jack Whitfield in a quest to unearth his secret past. No doubts in my mind you need to read this series in order, otherwise you will have too many unanswered questions...

The story in a few words:

Jack and his partner Natasha are searching for the person who is responsible for tuning Jack an Olympic track athlete into a brutal hit man. This cloak and dagger quest will bring them to Prague to end up at a mystical castle off the coast of France. Along the way they will face an ambush by the agents of KIRO, an unexpected betrayal and a devastating plan to control the world’s communication....Every one’s life is on the line even those dear to Jack.

My thoughts:

What an exciting conspiracy Jack faces with many twists and turns and ups and downs to overcome. Along the way Jack is having a hard time with the knowledge that he has been brainwashed by a cult to do their bidding. The first person narrative reflects his inner turmoil...it so feels as he is speaking to you. I favour the first person narrative by a long shot.

It is so captivating when the KIRO assassins attempt to kill Jack and Natasha failed and deeper and deeper they see themselves smack into a ploy that will bring all communication down. They must to do their best to thwart it and save the wold. Hold on to your seats you in for a ride. Excellently done all loose ends unanswered from the previous story are neatly tied leaving us to believe this may be the end of this series...but no...”The Curator” ends “à la James Bond” with all the bing bang and the obligatory escape and all ends well.

This 9th installment is good Mr. Mefford always delivers a fast-paced, well-written story with lots of excitement one can wish for. He has his formulae and he is sticking to it. Jack will always hold us captive...maybe Mr. Mefford can give Jack a break soon....

"Cultured", by D.P. Lyle

The Jake Longly series Book# 6

Although I haven’t read the previous installments I had no trouble getting into this book. Mr. Lyle gives us little background but enough to get the drift and move on and enjoy his latest. “Cultured” rips a page right out of the famous Jeffrey Epstein saga and is freaky to no end.

Said in a mischievous tone we have a story that soon turns quite dark but is so interesting I stayed captive till the very end. It opens when April Wilkerson dropped off the radar after becoming involved in a self-help and enlightenment retreat TLM (The Lindemann Method) that recruits wealthy people and promises enormous financial returns. April is an attractive, smart and culture individual although she doesn’t have the $120,000 membership fee needed is willing to work as a hostess.....Now do I have to go any further.....

What a story the author spins on us. Of course I omitted a lot that is said in this novel to pique interest...don’t miss this. The writing is great and as the layers peel away...darker edges appear. Does TLM make money for his investors or is this just an expensive scam? The prose is stylish, smart and compelling all this is wrapped up in a clever plot filled with twists to surprise even the hard core mystery seeker. This is definitely a juicy mystery told with snapping dialogue and played by fun characters. Jake, a former Major league pitcher and reluctant P.I and his girlfriend, Nicole are the protagonists that saved the day finding April and all the girls that went missing...and put an end to TLM.

This story is fast-paced, slick and a page-turner I devoured in no time.

A copy of this book was provided by Oceanview Publishing for my thoughts: this is the way I see it.

"Chasing Monsters", by Melinda Woodhall

Bailey Flynn FBI Mystery book #3

The story n a few words:

Books by Melinda Woodhall are addictive and a breeze to read. In this latest adventure she pins her protagonist against a vengeful killer who carries out an insidious plan of death and retribution. Bailey must delve into a criminal world of corruption, deceit and murder and find the killer before he can kill again...but time is running out.

“Chasing Monsters” picks up where book #2 left us, so it is important to read this series in order.

My thoughts:

We are into an action packed journey as we follow Bailey and her loyal partner Ludwig, her search and rescuer dog, into numerous path many dead end ones looking for the whodunit. She runs the show, nothing will stop her in finding the identity of the murdered person, running DNA test, visiting prisoners to get information. She is a real Pitbull nothing will get in her way. She digs so much that she becomes a target to be silenced and dragging her family along the way.

As the body mounts she is more determined to catch the monsters and the tension is at its highest level. Nothing can be better to pin us down into a thrilling ride, biting our nail till the very end than an exciting plot. Although this story may be about murder it is not gruesome, we do not have vivid torture scenes or descriptive accounts of how attacks were done. It is done softly and with taste but it seemed a little unrealistic.

Of course Ms. Woodhall did not forget to inject Bailey’s personal life into her drama to soften things; a touch of romance will do the trick. I like the characters but still Ludwig wins the best actor award.

I am a fan of this author and I will be looking forward for her next book.

I received an advance copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntary

"Zealous", by Alex Rawecki

Mr. Rawecki is new at the game of fiction and right from the bat he has penned a winner. “Zealous” is a fast paced techno-thriller filled with suspense and intrigue that dabbles intensively into neuroscience. One can say it is a bit on the sci-fi side but what an exciting and unpredictable read very hard to put aside.

The story in a few words:

Nika Beresic, a talented scientist, has vivid and recurring dreams of being a secret agent. Is her mind playing tricks? After experiencing an epileptic seizure and ending up in hospital she discovers her dreams may be more than a figment of her imagination. She sets out to unravel what happened to her memory and while doing so she learns that she is up against a powerful enemy....Nika becomes a liability to be dealt with.......will she make it out alive...

More thoughts:

At the very start I didn’t think I would enjoy this story but once it got rolling and the action kicked in I was hooked. The story flows well and is very graphic. It would make a great movie it surely is a fabulous read. This thriller is a taut and action packed not a dull moment following the scientist and Marc, her partner, in a desperate search for answer. This blend of sci-fi and mystery ticks all the right boxes: well written, exciting storyline, great characters, lots of suspense and action and to boot a fresh and entertaining story.

“Thank you Mr.Rrawecki for this unpredictable and exhilarating read

"Not Dead Yet", by Peter James

Roy Grace book #8

At one point you need to put a series aside, forget it for some time but eventually you cannot resist coming back. I did just that almost 10 years since I read book 1 and from time to time through the years read one more till I reached book # 7 got hooked again and here I am reviewing book #8 2 weeks later.

Rock superstar Gaia is chosen to play the leading role as Maria Fitzherbert in the biggest Hollywood production. The greatest love story between King George 1V and Maria Fitzherbert is to be filmed on location in Brighton and Hove.

An obsessed stalker is after Gaia who may have followed her to the UK it is up to Detective Superintendent Roy Grace to make sure she stays safe. Meanwhile, a torso is discovered on a chicken farm and Roy Grace is soon to be father. The two ongoing plot move beautifully well. To put salt on everything, Grace’s missing wife Sandy is messing around.....oh boy....That part I simply loved, how to add tension to a plot this author has a hack in doing so. All this is neatly entwined to make a coherent and engaging tale full of distractions: twists and turns sure thing to have us turning the pages.

“Not Dead Yet” is an enjoyable read, a suspenseful police procedural hard to put aside. This is definitely a classic crime novel which has everything I look for. The main character is a lady Ga Ga hybrid, an international celebrity with a big ego who will play the role as mistress to the King. Her role may be farfetched but it is well done to captivate us well least it did to me. M. James blurs the fact and fiction a lot in this production but having limited knowledge of Royalty in England, anything goes as long as the plot is captivating. The pace is good and the plot reads well. The characters are excellent players and I loved following the recurring ones through their long saga. Yes I up to read the next on “Dead Man’s Time”.

I think it is important to read this series in order otherwise one may think this latest is a bit silly.

"Africa", by Ty Patterson

Cutter Grogan book #8

This latest brings Cutter to South Africa to avenge the murder of his godson Thabo Nkosi and his father, Cutter’s best friend. This is a personal matter for him and refuses the help of Zeb Carter and the team but accept the one of Warner, their mighty computer and of all their gadgets. Off to Cape Town he goes....

From the time he sets foot in Cape Town all hell breaks loose and from then on we are in never ending chaos and mayhem as our super hero follows the trail that would lead him to the killers. Along the way Warner interacts with Cutter to give him pointers. Where Cutter goes behind him is a trail of bodies more than we can visualize and getting to that point is why Ty Patterson is a master in giving us entertaining action sequences. A tad of humour to break the tension is ejected when Quindica and Difiore on a different assignment show up to tease him and when Cutter makes friends with the local cow (lol). Of course Cutter, Quindica and Difiore get in trouble leaving Zeb Carter and the team to save the day.

Mission accomplished

As usual the plot is fast and furious, well executed and exciting. The characterization well done but the players are the same same old ones very predictable in all ways. You must love reading action packed stories to fully enjoy them. The Cutter Grogan series is my preferred although I loved all of them.

Thank you Mr. Patterson for the hours of enjoyment

"Break-Up Pact", by Emma Lord

I really stepped away from my usual genre tackling this deeply emotional novel. One side of me says I loved it yet the other tells me what a boring book....How do I get out of this conundrum and say my true feelings without getting in trouble...ok I may be exaggerating a bit.

The story in a few words:

June and Levi were two best friends who haven’t spoken in ten years pretend to date after break-ups with their respective exes go viral. They both experienced public, humiliating break-ups with their exes that spread like wildfire across TikTok and daytime talk shows alike. By doing this subterfuge June hopes to get back on her feet and Levi wish his ex. realize she made a mistake and comes back.....

My thoughts:

The positive and the negative:

Emma Lord’s writing is very enthusiastic and moving. She beautifully blends humour and emotional depth in one smooth stroke. The story in its own is cute and the characters are well defined. The author also has a beautiful style if you like mushy and extremely slow story. The plot is so slowed down by June’s frequent monologues in which she expresses her emotions and past experiences...over and over. I often wish things would speed a bit but no, I almost fell asleep, unfortunately, so bored I became that was happy to see the very predictable ending in sight. This fiction was not for me: messy bits of heartbreak, crying, run-ins with exes and the multiple crisis got to be too much for me.

This story about love, friendship and self-discovery is not for everyone but to those believing in magic of love will simply adore “The Break-Up Pack”. So far I seemed to be an exception in thinking this is a boring fiction...Judge for yourself.

I received this ARC from St-Martin Press via Netgalley for my thoughts: this is the way I see it.

"Murder 8", by Brian Shea

Nick Lawrence #5

This book has an awesome story filled of action, suspense and is quite entertaining. Mr. Shea gave us a great story very relevant in today’s age.....opioids and the dangers of fentanyl. In addition to following the law enforcement coming down hard on the rampant drug rings that is plaguing the streets of Massachusetts the author gives us a captivating spin into the corruption that is rampant everywhere.

Nick Lawrence and the Valhalla Groups are tasks with taking down the distribution network but when they were about to make a bust, things go south. The drama started when the daughter of Senator Buzz Litchfield overdosed and he wanted revenge....tension galore from then on. The plot is good and moves along at a steady pace, I also like the characterisation: Declan, Nick, Mouse and Jay are depicted with care, although without having read the previous books it was harder to relate to them. It may be recommended to start with the previous books first.

Who doesn’t love crooked politicians? And what a joy when they get what they deserve.

This novel is not taxing, it is short and sweet and is one to zipped through it in no time.

“Murder 8” is a pretty good read I enjoyed passing time with.

"Dead Man's Grip", by Peter James

Roy Grace series book #7

I loved this story. Peter James has given us a most intense and suspenseful mystery with lots of police procedural and has teased us with little bit more into his protagonist personal life.

One raining morning Tony Revere is killed on his bike in a road traffic collision. The vehicles involved are a car with a drunk driver, an articulated lorry with a driver that is overtired and a white van who quickly fled from the scene. Tony is the grandson of New York Mafia and his family is super powerful. Upon learning the death of her son, Mrs. Revere set about plotting revenge.....mafia style. Ds Roy Grace and his team will do their best to thwart all plans and get to the villain before too many deaths.....

The plot all spools out from this tragic accident.

The author pays astounding attention to details such as locations, his characters and the depth of research, maybe a bit too much at times. The story may be over the top at time and may be a good idea to suspend disbelief for the plot to work but as soon as I personally did I found myself completely absorbed in the mystery. The suspense level as the novel progresses is brilliant especially when two of drivers involved in the crash are found tortured and murdered. When Carly Chase, the car driver begins to suspect that she is next....The narration reflects how scare she is. The writing style is quite representative of Mr. James ability to realistically portray human behaviour. Each characters are unique and well drawn.

What a page-turner, so gripping it grabbed hold of me and wouldn’t let go until I had finished the last sentence. “Dead Man’s Grip” is really an enjoyable book and a compelling read.

"Show Game", by Steve Anderson

Is it payback for harm done or justice rendered?

Stepping away from historical fictions Mr. Anderson gives us a new look into his creativity by thrusting us in a mind game. “Show Game” is as psychological thriller doing exactly that.

The story in a few words:

A vigilante known by the alias “Alex” takes a predatory priest, a double-dealing politician and a fraudulent philanthropist all of them transgressors captive and has ways of making them confess on camera for the entire world to witness. Alex knows what they have done and Show Game will expose them for all to see....vengeance is sweet....and the game is on. Enjoy this tale that blends intrigue and mystery.

My thoughts:

This story is fast-paced and quite thought provoking. It brings out topics quite relevant today and is said with deep feelings. I like this twisted game of confession with this vigilante taking justice into their own hands, forcing abusers into a confession while playing a game. When Owen Tanaka, an investigative reporter, determined to unmask the vigilante comes in play....undecided whether to stop this criminal mastermind or not...Definitely we are into an exciting game, one that gives us a heart-pounding ride till the very end. The imagery is vivid and will stay in mind for some time after the closing page, writing my thoughts I still picture the sequences frame by frame...This story is well said and the presentation well-done. With this new direction Mr. Anderson proves his ability to give us even difficult subjects.

Thank you Mr. Anderson

"A Lethal Question", by Mark Rubinstein

I loved this story from the moment I opened the first page “A Lethal Question” is exciting and very intense, it moves at breakneck speed, oh yes, I kept flipping the pages with turbo fingers eager for the next move.
Imagine yourself a psychologist. On a session a patient pops a loaded question at you “Ya wanna know who clipped Boris Levenko?” What would you do?

This is the same question Russian and Albanian mobsters want answered. Bill is an assuming professional but when a mob faction discovers that one of their own blabbed to Bill...he is marked for assassination. Bill is force to go on the run......and the fun commences...enjoy....

This is a well-built story, each chapter highlights a sequence in tracking and dogging as Bill and Elena are on the run. Bill met Elena while hiding at a friend’s place and unavoidably she also became a target. Living in constant fear Bill’s nightmare begins in the digital age where a hacker’s expertise anyone can be easily located...In the narration you can feel the fear, the apprehension and most of all the paranoia that set in. Every suspicious figure seemed like a potential mafia henchman. As the struggle to evade capture goes on the suspense is at its highest. Definitely this story is a version of Sopranos on steroids.

This is tale that blends the best elements of a psychological thriller and an action thriller all in one and gives us a page- turner to be entertained for hours.

"Bombmaker", by Daniel J. Davies

The year is 1989

This story is a mystery, a thriller and a suspense genre story. “Bombmaker” is an absorbing and complex drama that did fantastic work in keeping my mind engaged from the opening page.

“Bombmaker” is a story of an American interrogator who seeks information on a prisoner after uncovering evidence of a major terrorist plot to kill thousands of U.S. civilians. Emma Ripley, a divorcée and single parent, gets the assignment to interrogate Georges Fadi Subdallah who had crashed his Vespa loaded with explosives at Boston’s Hancock building and survived self-immolation. Now he is in custody mangled and tight- lipped. This is a heavy book that tells us a lot. In a few words: a riveting drama about radicalization and terrorist surveillance on American soil.

Mr. Davies has crafted an intriguing and suspenseful drama filled with action. The plot tells us how U.S. born Fadi, proceeds to his planned spot and detonates himself. How he was recruited and how Marcel indoctrinated him. The narrative which weaves between Emma’s mission and Fadi’s backstory is masterful. Along the way, the author skillfully depicts Fadi’s chilling changes. I love the main characters; they have surprisingly a lot of similarity: parents who would do anything and couldn’t do enough. Emma and Fadi are complex and likeable in their own ways. The story also brings us to Boston with all its cultural diversity and rich landmarks.

In a few words:

Gripping narrative, wonderful characters and a storyline told by a master storyteller.

My thanks to the Publisher Book Whisperer for sending me a copy of this book for my thoughts: this is the way I see it.

"Hope to Die", by James Patterson

Alex Cross book #22

I love James Patterson’s books even after numerous outings he still has a knack for giving us a fast-paced, engaging stories that has us gripped from the first page. Even after reading 22 books in this series he manages to stay focussed on giving us an exciting read. This one is closely linked to “Cross My Heart” which ended in a cliff-hanger with our protagonist distraught and lost. Alex Cross series is definitely one of my favourite, no one does it better than James Patterson.

Summary in a few words:

“Detective Alex Cross is being stalked by a psychotic genius, forced to play the deadliest game of his career.

Cross’s family: his loving wife Bree, the wise and lively Nana Mama, and his precious children-have been ripped away. Terrified and desperate, Cross must give this mad man what he wants if he has any chance of saving them most important people in his life. The stakes have never been higher. What will Cross sacrifice to save the ones he loves?”

More thoughts:

This is an easy read with short chapters that propels you to read just one more chapter. Alex is such a great character you definitely want him to succeed in finding and saving his love ones. We are teased from page one with the discovery of bodies leaving us wondering could they be Alex’s family....bit by bit we are plunged into the drama along with Alex and we feel his anxiety in finding his family mutilated by an insane individual or even worst never finding them. The tension is palpable....Never a dull moment spending time with Alex....

Although I love this series I take my time between books in order to enjoy them at the maximum otherwise I may say as some do that the action is the same same old thing....

I enjoyed passing time with Alex and I will again after all.... as of today there are 33 books in this series...wow I have a lot a catching up to do. I am looking forward in doing so.

"A Slay Ride Together With You", by Vicki Delany

A Year Round Christmas Mystery #7

Ms. Delany writes all kinds of cozy mystery stories that are fun to read. The stage is set in Rudolph, New York, where the mystery will have shop owner Merry Wilkinson helping her best friend Vicky Casey and her fiancé Mark Grosse move into the historic Cole House, an old home deemed haunted....of course odd goings on starts the moment Vicki and Mark move in...Even a body of a man is found on the grounds triggering all kinds of speculation.

I haven’t read the all the previous books in this series but I can assure that at any point you can pick up a book and be right at home. This one is set during Easter time but the town’s hasn’t left its Christmas spirit go after all Rudolph is known as “America’s Christmas Town” for a reason. Mark was unlucky enough to have found the body of the man and has fast become the prime suspect as Detective Diane Simmonds sets her focus on him. Merry, Vicki, the opera diva, Santa and most of the town people spring into action to find solutions and solve the puzzle so that Mark can be vindicated.

The action is slow moving but does keep us in a soft suspense from the time Mark was blamed till the motives were uncovered and the killer was found. Ms. Delany style is simple and easy to follow and for us to be totally immersed in the going on. This is real chick-lit at its best and a joy to read.

"The Blind Devotion of Imogen", by David Putnam

The Misadventures of Imogen Taylor

After reading a few of Mr. Putnam books I came to look for his works without even reading the synopsis I just get it...well I will have to be more selective from now on. I honestly can say this standalone was not for me and by far. The storyline is convoluted, very slow and by the end not much a story at all. It was one of those books I took my time reading it: a few chapters at the time and so easily put aside for another day.... if you like eccentric characters and a story that extremely creative you probably will love this book. The main character Imogene is complicated and not too likeable but she provide some funny moments.

But who is Imogene Taylor?

In 1973, Imogene is seventy-five years old; on parole for murder and works at Dentco, a store that sells dented canned food. Twelve years ago she went to prison for the murder of her husband Wayne. There she wrote a novel about the assassination of a US president....and the story goes on...and on....and is all over the place.

To end:

Not for everyone, definitely not my cup of tea.

I received this book from Level Best Books via Netgalley for my thoughts: this is the way I see it.

"Trouble is Brewing", by Vicki Delany

Tea by the Sea Mystery #5

If I want a cozy mystery I know I will be well serve reading any of Ms. Delany’s stories. Her tales are simple, well written and not taxing for those like I needing a pause from action packed thrillers that take your breath away. I did not read the precious books in this series and in no ways felt lost. The author smoothly blends in every player like you have known them forever.

The story in a few words:

The Reynolds and the Hill family are gathered at Tea by the Sea for Hannah Hill bridal shower. While sipping delicious tea the families shower her with presents ...until the last unwrapped gift contains a beheaded Raggedy Ann doll and triggers bloodcurdling scream....Then all hell breaks loose....even a murder.....

More thoughts:

This is a delectable tall with an English flair to it. Put together a party, a murder, waves crashing on the beach, add a sleuth and toss in sweet bake goods as a bonus the result is a clever story to enjoy while sipping Earl Grey and loosing yourself in another world....

Vicki Delany has provided us with a cute cozy mystery.

"Dog Day Afternoon", by David Rosenfelt

Andy Carpenter book # 29

This mystery has a lot of legal aspect to it and a bit of court shenanigans but mostly is my preferred: the subdued humour that slips from time to time to make me smile. This author knows how to talk to us and tells stories in the first person narrative. Yes Andy whispered everything; he is totally in my head.....

Although this novel is part of a series it stands well on its two feet and can be read as a standalone with no trouble.

Although retired Andy carpenter runs a dog rescue organization for years his calling is representing clients in court. His long-time friend Marcus Clark is his sidekick who keeps his personal life to himself. Marcus takes disadvantage young men under his wings. So when Marcus needs Andy’s help no doubt he has it. Marcus friend Rick William is the prime suspect in the murder of 6 of his colleagues at work and needs all the help he can get...Springs into action, his our debonair lawyer....and we are into a very engaging mystery.

This mystery is witty, well-paced and filled with snappy one liner and to top it all amazing characters. The court room scenes are at a minimum but give the needed punch with all the legal verbalism...

“Dog day Afternoon”, makes it at the top of my best read list so far this year.

Excellent read I enjoyed passing time with.

I received this ARC from St Martin’s Press via Netgalley for my thoughts: this is the way I see it.

"The Waters of Eternal Youth", by Donna Leon

Commissario Brunetti # 25

In this latest outing Commissario Guido Brunetti look into a 15 years old mystery. Manuela was almost 16 when she fell into a canal or maybe pushed. She sustained permanent brain damage. The only witness was a drunk that saw a man push her. Manuela’s grand- mother wants to know the truth and asked Brunetti to look into it before she dies. The case brings him around the city.

I haven’t read a Leon’s mystery in a long time and was happy to get back into the swing of thigs. Brunetti hasn’t changed, he is still an unusual character with no major character flaw or trouble with relationship and he has a happy married life with Paola and the typical everyday contacts with his teenage kids. The usual players we came to know and love from the previous books also make their appearance and played their parts as expected. What comes out is how Ms. Leon hasn’t lost her touch in masterfully creating intrigue giving us enough clues so by the end we be satisfied with the solution but of course some may have guess long before. Ms. Leon treats murder as a simple thing....

This 25th book did not disappoint with its wonderful evocation of Venice’s streets and piazzas, food and the atmosphere of an old world confronting the new one.

It is simply well-written, easy to follow and keep a steady pace and of course gives us intrigue and wonderful characters. Although this latest may not have extensive police procedural some may wish for, but be assure the plot concludes with satisfaction.
