"Dirt Dealers", by A.W. Kaylen

Heather Chase FBI # 0.5

This novella of 85 pages or so was a promotion to introduce us to the author and his series. I received this prequel through Bookfunnel at no cost.

This sort story has quite a punch and is said in somewhat crude and choppy language while Heather tries to work with her fellow Agents. She seems smarter than them, analysing the situation before jumping to conclusion. This mystery is about sex scandal, a string of murders and a secret no one wants to reveal, an ordinary case of course given to a female Agent....something is not right and Heather uses her instinct to solve the puzzle and wrap up the murder case...

The storyline is captivating enough, active and provides some twists to derail us, suspense is there to keep the guessing game on and manages to do so till the very end. So-so characters very stereotypical, nothing special come out of them. I would say it is the run of the mill mystery/police procedural. Good but not exceptional.

"The Warsaw Sisters" by Amanda Barratt

WW11 Poland

This is the story of twin sisters Antonina and Helena Dabrowska whose strong bond will be tested by the devastation of war. Ms. Barratt brings us on a heart wrenching journey along with the characters as the sisters bravely fought in different ways the oppression of Nazis. Helena joined a resistance cell while Antonina smuggled Jewish children out of the ghetto.

The historical events are woven within the fictional characters lives and storyline, giving us a glimpse of the courage and sacrifice the citizens of Warsaw had to face. Told from the point of view of each sister and in alternate chapters we navigate through the tragedy that unfolded in Warsaw for five long years of oppression, brutality and terror. Although all Polish people suffered, the Jewish people were singled out. Jolanta, a pseudo for Irena Sendler, a legend during the war was Antonina’s contact. We have snippets of the dangerous and important work this group of women did. As for Helena her story was inspired by the Warsaw Uprising; the most heroic and tragic chapter’s in Poland’s history. We also dabbled in many other facets such as the Katyn massacre, Treblinka deportations, the Wola and Ochta massacres and many other major and tragic events.

The style is very emotional, every word vividly said and touching. This story has depth with a strong sense of place and time. The characters are sharply drawn although I did find the sisters were a bit too lucky to escape so much tragedy without being hurt even killed, even some of their action should have brought retaliation: slapping a German in the face and getting away with it...questionable as an example.

The author’s notes at the end of the book tells us why “The Warsaw Sisters” is a powerful story hard to put down.

I received this ARC from Revell Publishing through The First Reviewer Program.

"The Proof of the Pudding", by Rhys Bowen

A Royal Spyness Mystery Book # 17

I started this series at this point and I assure you that in no way was I lost not knowing what had previously happened, Ms. Bowen does excellent work in introducing her characters and melting them smoothly into a new story. Although it may be great the read this series in order since snippets of the past does pop in from time to time.

Georgie is home awaiting the birth of her child, and to show off her new French chef, a party is set to celebrate Sir Hubert’s return from his last expedition. One of the guests is Gothic horror novelist Sir Mortimer Mordred who lives nearby wants to borrow Georgie’s chef for his own party. He loves to give his guesses a tour of his garden, then a banquet is served where several of the them suddenly became sick......everything points to Pierre the French chef but Georgie wants none of it and goes all out to defend him.....

This is amateur sleuth at its best. Clues come very slowly to stretch the suspense and it is done beautifully. At first I thought this drama was way to slow moving for my taste but lo and behold I got caught in the excitement and held captive till the murderer was known. Along the way we meet colourful characters, a mix of celebrities such as Agatha Christie and Laurence Olivier. The maid and house help played roles to a tee and were entertaining along the way. Not forgetting the dreadful sister in law. In my mind, I told her to buzz off many times but Georgie was graceful and tolerant....

I like the simple style and the active narration with lack of frills or posh words used by British Aristocracy and hard for some of us to comprehend. Most of all the detective work is sound and captivating and the story can move on with Georgie now a mother..... Till next time....what will Ms. Bowen come up with to give us another entertaining read...well-said and well-done.

Many thankyous to Berkley Publishing Group as well as Netgalley for providing this ARC.

"An Innocent Child", by Roberta Kagan

“Margot’s Secret” book #2

It is highly recommended to start with the first book “The Secret They Hide” in order to enjoy and not be lost. Book#2 picks up where the first left off and we have little back information to situate us.

Nazism is right around the corner. Margot is married to Max and they are close friends with Ben, a Jewish doctor. When their sickly son Erik grapples with a life-threatening illness they turn to Ben, but the rising tide of anti-Semitism, Ben doesn’t have the medication to take care of him. In desperation Margot turns to her sister Trudy, who is married to an ambitious Nazi officer but Trudy has deep feelings for Max and wants his attention at no cost.... She is holding back a family secret that could change everything if revealed and will shatter families....

Although this historical fiction is set before and during WW11 it is mainly of sisters and how far one is willing to go to help a sick child. Ms. Kagan doesn’t shy away from the horrors of Action T-4 a program set by the Nazis to euthanized individual not deemed to be part of the Aryan society: mentally ill or physically deformed individual. These poor souls where sent to a hospital who would give them special care...the author also tackles in her storyline the Lebensborn Program, a program set to increase Germany’s population.

We have a lot going on which fans of historical fiction may find repetitious but around all the known events we do have an interesting family saga and an intriguing backstory of Trudy’s maid. As usual Ms. Kagan has painted a dramatic story that could have happened during war time. The emotional struggles and the many changes the citizens had to endure are well noted and highlight how power to a group ruined the lives of many. I am with some reviewers saying that Ms. Kagan’s words are not simple words but words we need to learn from....

The writing is simple and well-done. The narration flow smoothly and keep a steady pace, in all very active. This is an interesting storyline that held my attention from start to finish. I cared for the characters; they each have a strong personality to love or to hate. In all this is a good book.

Well-said, well-done

"The Porcelain Maker", by Sarah Freethy

This is the story of two lovers caught at the crossroads of history and of a daughter’s search for the truth.

This tale was inspired by the actual porcelain factory in Dachau and span through the horrors of WW11 and the 20th century. This is an epic story of love and betrayal that starts in Germany in 1929 with two talented individuals Max Ehrlich, an Austrian Jewish architect and Bettina Vogel, an artist, whose drawn love and aspirations were dashed by the rising threat of the Nazis.

In alternate chapters, the narrative moves back in forth in time to America in 1993 with Clara, Bettina’s daughter, embarking on a journey to trace her roots and determined to find the identity of her father....

This story vividly describes the scenery, characters’ tragic circumstances, the concentration camps, the beautiful art work and the evilness of the times. Both timelines are brought together beautifully and in a memorable way. The story is rich in vocabulary and the depth and texture of the narrative is not overwhelming. The era is right up my alley I should have enjoyed this story, most reviews I read say this is an outstanding historical novel.

But what went wrong? Most of the time I simply couldn’t stay focused on what was being said. Why? First: the romance between Max and Bettina’s was quite banal and their characters lacklustre. Second: Max and Bettina story moved at a very slow pace, borderline boring. Third: the last part seemed rushed and too many questions flashed in my mind that I never found answers for, maybe my mind wander too much..... But I did enjoy Clara and her quest for the truth.

Even with its qualities ,this novel was a chore to read.

My thanks to St.Martin’s Press and Netgalley for the ARC

"Betrayed by Evil", by Melinda Woodhall

Bridget Bishop FBI, book #8

This final episode is oozing with suspense and excitement and brings us in a world rarely understood of witchcraft and its coven.

Returning home after a long absence Tempest Grove is determined to find the truth behind her twin sister’s disappearance decades earlier. Unfortunately digging into the past brought the wrong people out and it didn’t take long before she fell into a deadly trap and found murdered. Bridget Bishop is called in to join in the investigation of the woman’s brutal murder. At first suspicion falls on a local coven but who was really behind....

I love this series and I hate seeing it end but for sure Ms. Woodhall will spin another one that may include this wonderful character...future will let us know.

As usual the plot is solid and entertaining. Action packed and of course filled with drama, twists and turns. I found it hard to guess who the “Raven” was and what was behind all the killings “offerings” but drip by drip the clues are revealed during that time I was on the edge of my seat and biting my nails, the suspense was at its high. Added is a dash of magic to pique interest wasn’t a bad idea. Yes this book brings us in the world of make believe as most books will.....so let yourself be bewitched with “Betrayed by Evil” and enjoy the thrills and surprises it brings....

I received a free copy of this book and I leave a voluntary review, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

"Betrayal", by Phillip Margolin

Robin Lockwood book #7

A Legal Thriller

In a few words:

Robin, MMA fighter turned Portland, Ore., criminal defense attorney takes on the case of a former rival, Mandy Kerrigan, who has been charged with murdering a family of four. Though Mandy maintains her innocence, witnesses saw her banging on the door of the Finch family home after beating up the Finch’s oldest son, Ryan, at a bar when the performance-enhancing drugs he sold her showed up on a drug test. Robin is convinced she’ll find answers about the Finches’ enemies that will divert blame from Mandy. But this case turned not to be a cake walk.....

Defending her old nemesis in a multiple murder case with too many suspects, where success might cost Robin’s life, is not simple. To complicate matters, she is dating the DA.

My thoughts:

I am a long-time fan of Phillip Margolin and I am always eager to read what he has in store for us.

The court scenes maneuvers sucked me in from the start, although fictional this legal drama sounded real to me. I was captivated by the setting, Portland Oregon, where it seems you can pull off random murders, well at less according to this thriller. Mr. Margolin knows how to spin a case where the stakes are high and the truth is elusive, where fact twists the case in all directions, he surely does that with aplomb. Maybe trial attorneys can poke holes into this story but I think following the antics was exciting and suspenseful. I agree with some who think the Russian mafia connection is weak and really didn’t ring true, but what the heck it made for a very captivating read.

Definitely this story is characters driven. With its snappy dialogue and short chapters to help push things along, I was eager to see how this case would turn out.

It is a page turner no doubt in my books.

This is a good novel and one of Mr. Margolin I enjoyed the best.

Another excellent book I received from St-Martin Press via Netgalley

"The Sign of Four Spirits", by Vicki Delany

Sherlock Holmes Bookshop Mystery book #9

Gemma Doyle, co-owner and manager of “The Sherlock Homes Bookshop and Emporium loves to turn into an amateur sleuth in her spare time and can’t help but to poke her nose where it doesn’t belong. “The Sign of Four Spirits” brings us to West London, Cape Code, Massachusetts during the tourist season when a psychic fair is about to open. Thinking they are a fraud, Gemma doesn’t believe in fortune tellers and mediums but with much probing by her friends she joins them at a séance held by Madame Levalier. During the séance, there is a commotion in the library and when the lights are turned on, Madame Levalier is dead stabbed in the back of the neck with a long sharp hat pin...Just the right incentive for Gemma to spring into action. I leave it to you to read this soft mystery and to come to your own decisions....

I enjoy soft mystery from time to time and I know one by Vicki Delany will answer my wish. Although we have a couple of murders, none are gruesomely described. Of course Gemma was there to help her cop boyfriend with the investigation and as the story builds up we have a touch of the paranormal and a hunt for the whodunit. Everything moves at a steady pace, no rushing around just smoothly said till we reach the surprising reveal. The plot is good and fun to follow.

Gemma is a good character who comes off as a rude, blunt at time but she doesn’t go around bushes and tells it as she see fit. We also have recurrent actors as well as a few new ones to enjoy; they are quite a contrast to Gemma. Readers should enjoy this cast. I simply love Moriarty, the cat.....

This 9th installment works fine as a standalone and should please most lovers of soft, well-said and well plotted mysteries.

"Odyssey's End", by Matt Coyle

Rick Cahill book # 10

San Diego PI Rick Cahill is in financial trouble, his wife and daughter left him after multiple fits of rage cause by CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy) which is slowly destroying his brain. In desperation he accepts an offer from Peter Stone to find and protect his daughter, Angela Albright, from a Russian mobster Sergei Volkov, whose testimony had helped to convict him to a 15 years sentence. Sergei was about to be released.....S50, 000 to track Angela was hard to say no to....but his effort attracts attention....this case may be his last hoorah....

With its many references from the past to situate us this story is not hard to pick up at this point and reads well on its own.

The story is well plotted and written and of course Rick Cahill is a sympathetic character to root for. A simple case of missing person turns out to be more complicated by multiple death threats, very bad criminals, a brush with cryptocurrency, the witness protection program and the mighty FBI. Why not add clues that will lead him to a violent and bloody shootout by the end. Mr. Coyle did not forget to add all the suspense needed to make his story exciting. From slow moving action at first it turned out that the many twists and turns provided at the end certainly held my attention till I close the last page. Along the way, a lot of focus is set on Cahill’s personality, he broods a lot about his life; he misses his wife and daughter, and harps about it from the beginning till the end, it is a bit much...I wanted to tell him get a life Cahill...but who knows what the author has in store for
him next...

"A Stranger in the Family", by A.J. McCarthy

A Charlie & Simm Mystery book # 3

In a few words:

When a strange man approaches Shanna McGuire and shocks her with a story that makes her question her family history. She asks Simm to investigate the man’s claim. A former private investigator and pub owner in downtown Montreal he and his wife Charlie love to tackle simple case of genealogy and see what they will uncover. But what they think is a straightforward case soon takes a dangerous turn with threats, violence and homicide.

My thoughts:

I love how Ms. McCarthy incorporated in her tale the dark period in Quebec’s history, “The Duplessis Orphans” and has concocted masterfully an engaging mystery around this shameful time. Laced in, is a complicated family dynamics and an unwavering persistence to find the truth. Charlie and Simm exchanged their point of view in a good-humoured teasing way, it is pleasant to follow them. The many characters in this tale are interesting and are essential to propelling the plot forward which leads to a smashing disclosure. Not only, is this fast-paced and engaging story marred by the mistreatment of orphans it also takes us into a web of lies and betrayal while Charlie and Simm race against the clock to avert another murder.

I love this puzzle set in my home town and love how Charlie and Simm with their lovely pug Harley navigated the perilous journey while facing bodily threats. This story is well said, well-done and is captivating from start to finish.

"Blackfire", by Ty Patterson

Hawke and Stryker book #1

With 7 series in his library adding one more seemed to have been a breeze for Mr. Patterson. He has his formulae pat down to a tee and once again has giving us a new series with all the excitement we have come to expect and once again provided us with an action packed thriller introducing his new players: New York’s toughest PIs, former forces operatives Axtion Hawke and Kael Stryker.

When a mundane corporate espionage case lands on their desk and soon a sinister turn of events starts after their client is threatened, they then find themselves entangled in ruthless cartels, corrupt politicians and crooked cops.....Buckle up for a high-octane read.....

I am a huge fan of this author and have read all of his 47 books so far and plan to follow up in the future. I know his style will have a lot of action, lots of shooting, killings, lots of Kung foo style action, bad guys galore and good guys heroes and let’s not forget a story that is exciting and fast pace. “Blackfire” follows the same pattern as all of Mr. Patterson books. I know by now to be in the mood for this kind of stories in order to enjoy every moment.

Once started, the story captured my attention immediately and held it throughout. I like the new players, Hawke and Stryker, PIs with flair and ethics what is not to like. They are well-done and their action is in tune with their profession. To tight things up a bit, cameo appearance from Zeb and his team always here to save the day.... This is a good first outing for these two guys.

Although I like this new series and was such a thrilling experience to pass time reading it, I have to admit it is not my preferred series and this by far.

Thank you Mr. Patterson once again you made my day.

"Code Name Butterfly", by Embassie Susberry

Paris 1941, the Nazi occupation is imminent. When journalist Elodie Mitchell received an unexpected invitation to a Josephine Baker performance... meeting Jo will be a life changing event.....Beneath the glitz and glamour is a network of spies with mission to gather vital intelligence...

This fiction is the unforgettable tale inspired by the life of Josephine Baker who during the darkest days of WW11 has shown the extraordinary strength of the human spirit and of a young woman caught in the web....Both are Black Americans.

This is a complex story about family, racism, courage and love. It captures the flavour of France before and during the occupation. The setting and atmosphere is fantastic and seize perfectly the turbulent swirl of events during that time. The story is extremely slow moving at first but when France is invaded and tension grows among the population then the story has wind in its sails and we are off into one very exciting adventure following the two heroines and their friends, members of the resistance, blowing trains and killing or dodging the enemy and assisting those in need. Eventually escaping to Portugal and finally home...Only to return to France to their love....yes there is a hint of romance amongst the background of war...why not.

The style is fluid, eloquently written, the words have punch and no doubts came from the heart. The handful characters are colourful, well represent and easy to follow. I especially loved how the most celebrated night-club entertainer; the flamboyant Ms. Baker is featured.

Event with its slow tempo, this story captured my attention from start to finish and I can honestly say “Code Name Butterfly’” is a good book to enjoy and spend time with.

"Deadly Tides", by Mary Keliikoa

Misty Pines Mystery book#2

A Psychological suspense

This is a satisfying whodunit mystery and a well-crafted page-tuner. It brings Jax Turner, a small seaside town sheriff, to focus on his community while holding tight to the hope of getting back with his FBI agent ex-wife, Abby Kanekoa.

After looking into the request to make a welfare check on his brother a surf shop owner’s, Jax sets out only to find the man absent, looking further he finds tracks leading to a pool of blood and a severed foot on the beach...The find is not the only one recovered...FBI needed to be called bringing Jax” former wife into the picture.....and a dual investigation is launched.

What is not to like, this story is simply a fantastic read. We follow two interesting threads that eventually mesh together. While Jax does his investigation Abby’s troubles continues with her mother who has Alzheimer’s and needed to be place in a nursing home. Things turned not to be as simply as one thought. The story goes back and forth between the two and sometime crosses path when Abby works with her ex or vice-versa. But as more severed feet are found and more people go missing in the surfing community Jax suspect a serial killer is on the loose and as readers we are at the sea coast, the forest in all kind of weather and of course into an exceptional setting. Ms. Keliikoa’s writing is clear and powerful, she is a master shuffling a multi layered plot with characters that are complex, unique and seem like real people. Jax has a hard time facing his separation and the loss of his child while Abby still has mixed feelings about her ex and keeps her sorrow to herself. The narration is moving and will hit close to home for those who suffered the same experiences. In the words we sense their struggles and their pain we can only hope for a better outcome in the end. It really evokes sympathy... The writing craft is superb, the characters three-dimensional and the setting is a dream...What a combination. Well-said and well-done.

"The Secret They Hid", by Roberta Kagan

Margot’s Secret Book #1

The story primarily takes place in Berlin between 1915 and 1933 and it revolves around the captivating love triangle of two brothers, Leo and Alex in their share interest with the beautiful Adelaide. This story is of love, family secrets and the challenges of survival.

Although this fiction is set during the Great War, its aftermath and during the rise of Hitler it primarily tells a story of survival and gives us a perspective of life in Germany for the working classes. Mostly we see how Adelaide survives when both brothers were gone to war leaving her to support three very young children. This story is intense and difficult to put down. Adding a blend of romance and intrigue into the historical context is simply a bonus.

This story reads well and is smooth sailing from the opening chapters till the conclusion. I like that the focus was on the characters rather than on the horrors of war. Every word is written with passion, sorrow, despair and torment in everyday language. The characters are well-crafted: some you love and others you surely will dislike...

“The Secret They Hid “has all what lovers of historical fiction which for: a captivating story well told and well played out.

A million thank you to the publisher The Book Whisperer for this ARC which I received via Netgalley

"Sisters Under the Rising Sun", by Heather Morris

Although fictional this moving tale is based on the life of women who were internees of Japanese camps based in Indonesia during WW11. Their stories was overlooked by history and had to be told. Ms. Morris shares with us three years and seven months of their stay as POW. Among the internees were Dutch nuns, Dutch and English civilians as well as Australian nurses. The story mainly centers on Nesta, Ena and Norah who fought side by side to help whoever they could.

The novel is divided into three parts and is narrated from the perspectives of Norah and Nesta as they take turn chapter to chapter. It is said in a tone that is rather flat and neutral, I felt absolutely no bond with the characters they seemed cold and withdrawn. Could it be that relating a story second or third hands may have lost its sparkles down the line. The people represented here deserved full recognition. Unfortunately I found it difficult to be invested; the pacing is too slow, too monotonous and lacks vitality. I stayed with this story not because I enjoyed it but I wanted to know more about its historic facts. Overall I admit to be disappointed with the novel but still I appreciate that Ms. Morris brought to light a story of women in war, their sisterhood, their bravery and friendship. Although I may be overly critical here but I must say “Sisters Under the Rising Sun” is a rather exceptional story worth reading.

"The Kramski Case" by James Ward

Tales of M17 book #1

When Kramski, a retired SVR files- operative, starts assassinating paparazzi in three countries, then M17 steps up and soon discovers a covert operation is behind the killings. Joining the UK is a US cop and a Russian agent to unravel the intrigue. As readers off we go on a journey through multiple twists and turns with lots of surprising developments.

Layers and layers of intrigues with each espionage department kept in the dark about the work of the others. It is a messy and muddled plot although clearly the author knew where he was going with his story. I am being picky saying this but the multiple characters to keep track of was a bit much. I like the interesting and entertaining banter as well as how people lies and spreads rumours letting you wonder what is going on and where is the truth. The plotting which centers on conspiracy is very complex and intricate it left me frustrated at times but I got over this in the long run. Perhaps it was the few English (UK) vernaculars I was not too familiar with nevertheless it made good British espionage literature. The pacing is slow and steady with well-orchestrated action scenes such as car chase and aerial dogfight just to name a few to make us hold on till the conclusion. In my books “The Kramski Case” is way too complicated and farfetched and most of all it lacks the WOW factor to make it a stellar read.

"Fatal Exchange", by Russell Blake

Fatal book #1

This is an oldie I finally picked up from a long very long list of books I downloaded years ago. “Fatal Exchange” was published in 2011; definitely this book was overdue for my attention.

There are two storylines in this thriller that despite how different they are they work together well. First we follow a case of counterfeiting American hundred bills linked to the country of Myanmar where someone decided to take their cut to the US and buy valuable antiques with it. When Myanmar finance minister realizes it and sends a pair of killers on the trail of the money to get it back. No need for me to tell you how gruesome these hired hands do to their victims....the story describe this vividly. The author does not mince words.

The second story involves Tess Gideon, a bike messenger in New York. When someone starts to murder female bike messengers in a very gruesome way and at the same time she becomes embroiled in the counterfeiting scheme now she also becomes a target. Then comes to the forefront, Ron Stanford, a detective in the NYPD, to save the day and bring to justice a murderer who kills more and more quickly.

We have a very large cast of characters all with their own point of view including the serial killer as well as the Asian ones. No worries following this story the tempo stays steady, the language is clear and the narration makes every word come alive. I particularly like the short scenes that quickly change from character to character it made everything move fast. Not a dull moment in this gritty edge of your seat thriller.

"The Hanged Man", by John W. Mefford

Jack Whitfield series book #3

When a popular mayor is murdered by a Mexican drug cartel and the impact goes way beyond America to thousand miles away in Africa. Jack and his squad of operatives set to hunt down those who kill their people for their own greed. As the clock ticks they soon learn the scale of what they face....tick tick tick.

Ok John you did it again, your latest thriller is full of electrifying suspense and grabs us from start to finish. Action, action galore not a moment reprieve it cares to give us. Wild car chase, gun fights, bunch of terrorists, suicide bombers ...you name the bad guys and they are in this story. The plot moves so fast in this twisted story that I couldn’t help but flipping the pages at raging speed to see is Jack and his merry men would save the day..of course they did. At the heart of this story are how drugs are distributed around the world and how far the cartels are willing to go to make a profit.

The story brings us to the beaches of Puerto Vallarta, to the creepy cemeteries of New Orleans, to the African countries of Mali and Cameron tracking down drug dealers and falling into the hands of Boko Haram terrorists...who survived? This thriller turns out to be a scintillating international intrigue driven by pulse-pounding action hard not to like. It is so visual it could be a script written for a movie. Well said, well done.

Thank you John for the hours I spend enjoying you story...till next time.

"The Defector", by Chris Hadfield

Apollo Murders book #2

This top gun thriller is rich with inside details and political intrigue taken from real events and people that made the news at the time.

It opens in Israel in October 1973 when a Soviet MiG fighter pilot crashes his mythical “Foxbat” MiG-25 on landing and pleads to defect to the USA. Kaz Zemeckis, a former test pilot, is assigned to accompany him to the military’s most secret site in the US, Area 51. What happens next is a thrill on its own....and nerve- shredding rush of aerial combat till the very end. Tom Cruise step aside....

From start to finish the plot moves at full throttle and is an adrenaline laced espionage page turner at its best. This Cold War era story is drawn from the author’s combat experience. As a fighter pilot, test pilot and astronaut Chris Hadfield has a lot to say and makes his story of the Soviet-era exciting to read. We are taken to the sky in aerial combat to hunt down a high-level defector and at the same time uncover Soviets secrets what a way to get readers attention. I like the characters, they are well-defined and many represent real-life people both in the USA and Soviet Union. The narrative brings a vast knowledge in science and technology including the development of fighter jets and missiles.

Dogfight described by one that was once a fighter pilot is exciting. We are immediately placed in the cockpit; you can feel the pressure and the thinness of the air and the rotation you are subject to at high speed. Strap yourself in and enjoy the wild ride I know I did. Well said and well-done.

"A Lonesome Blood-Red Sun" by David Putnam

Dave Beckett book #2

With a tone of a cop on the beat this second book continues the day to day life of officer not like any others. He acts and thinks in ways no one can predict and by doing so gets himself in trouble with his superior Lieutenant Cordova whom he loves to call Lieutenant Cordoba to annoy him. Taken from his life experiences the author does marvel in creating scenes and doesn’t hold back. Through the eyes and voice of Beckett we are treated with the perspective of a patrol officer. The first person narrative works perfectly here.

This novel is split in two parts: one is set in 1984 when Beckett was a patrol officer and the second part in 1988 when he was promoted to bone detective. For those hating dual time this story is easy to follow.

The plot is slow moving and it takes a while before action sets in but when the upper crust takes revenge and assign Beckett on “bone cases” way out in the dessert it is the just punishment they take pleasure in giving him....but when the bone found turnout to be one of their own...Beckett goes to no end to find the killer. Then the action picks up and this mystery turns out to be an exiting ride till the end.

What a gritty police adventure this novel turned out to be. I enjoyed the writing style although it took awhile to get used to it but at the end my mind was tuned in and I enjoyed the unpredictable drama this “whodunit” mystery provided. Well-done.

"Shadows at Dusk", by Elizabeth Goddard

Missing in Alaska book #2

Detective Trevor West’s sister went missing in Alaska a year ago and he is desperate to finding her. She left a few photographs as clue to her whereabouts and needs the help of an experience pilot to track her down. The best resource is Carrie James who knows the area like the palm of her hand. ....and the adventure begins.

I received this Arc from the publisher Revell via Netgalley for my thoughts and I am glad to share them with you. Ms. Goddard is one of the authors I like to follow. .She writes with a steady hand and knows how to spin an interesting tale filled with suspense and thrills. Along the way a bit of love attraction never hurts and she does that with aplomb and taste. The dynamic between the main characters is cute and well-done. I really like how Carrie and Trevor interact. The suspense doesn’t stay to one case, Carrie has her own agenda, she needs to find who may have killed her closest friend and bring the killer to justice. As the two close in on the answers...they face dangers and connections they could not have imagined. What a wild ride we are into flying the sky of Alaska while moments later we are deep into caves with crumbling walls and miners (bad guys) plotting to blow up the shafts and the whole mining camp. The action is so exciting...I couldn’t help but flip the pages furiously (Ok, a bit heavy). Ms. Goddard vivid and colourful words bring her stories to life and make them believable.

This enjoyable story is a blend of suspense, faith, adventure, danger and romance.

"One Last Kill", by Robert Dugoni

Tracy Crosswhite book # 10

When I see a Robert Dugoni novel I have to put my hands on it, he is on the top of my favourite authors list. Although this latest is part of a series the story stands well on its own although it is a good idea to have read the previous installments to understands the politics within the police department and the pressure driving Tracy. This latest is an excellent addition to the series.

In a few words:

Hunting for a serial killer three decades later is not an easy task Tracy is just the person that could pull this through, she is expected to put all her attention on this cold case and bring the victim’s family closure.... even if it means working with her nemesis Captain Johnny Nolasco. Nolasco dares her to close the case...Revisiting old evidences and new .ones they unearth corruption and cover-ups...The illusive killer makes his chilling comeback.

My thoughts:

The chemistry between the two characters is interesting. Obvious, they don’t like each other even less working together, totally annoyed with every moves the other does. Nevertheless when they uncover a web of high level corruption and cover-ups Tracy and Nolasco pool they efforts and refused to give up.

I was immediately drawn into the plot which at first was rather slow to take sail and get going but when Tracy and Nolasco explored the leads and closer to the truth the got, danger lurked at every corner, tension mount and the story sets off into a pulse pounding mystery.

“One Last Kill” is well plotted, the characters play excellent roles, the many twist and turns give an excellent spin to be enjoyed. It is said in the third person narrative and in a dual timeline between the present when case was reopened and the 1993-1996 investigation into the first murder. It was very captivating to follow the different approaches. Although I loved the story mostly, the ending was a big disappointment... Justice wasn’t served here...

If you enjoy police procedurals and crime mysteries featuring a strong lead female investigator you may want to give this one a go.

Thank you Thomas & Mercer and Netgalley for this ARC

"Malibu Burning", by Lee Goldberg

Sharpe & Walker #1

Although this story is a work of fiction it is a real possibility it could happened. “Malibu Burning” is all about firefighting and investigating the cause and finding the culprit and is the exciting and very captivating new series around police procedural staring Andrew Walker an ex US Marshall and senior investigation Walter Sharpe. This installment has Danny Cole, a prisoner, who joins an unconventional prison release firefighting program where he is teamed up with elite firefighters. But Danny Cole has one thing in mind...his next heist. The plot centers mainly on Danny the con man and what he is planning. The other part deals with the two wisecracking detectives.

The story is written in two different timelines and the chapters shift back and forth between characters I found it difficult to follow a first but when I got the hang of it I understood better what was going on. The banter between the investigators is something else I needed to get used to but eventually I did and found Walker and Sharpe hilarious and in the long run I enjoyed following them. Yes the dialogue is bit tacky at times but also entertaining. Of course the moving plot is over the top it is actually an adrenaline ride one can enjoy once into it. There is so much going on: fire everywhere, drones and ping-pong balls, trees and bushes and houses in flames....vividly said ...what a picture it leaves in your mind especially these hot summer days with all the fires raging around the world.....

"Crossroads of Granite", by Michael Reit

Orphans of War book #3

“Crossroads of Granite” continues where “They Bled Orange”, left and is the final chapter in the trilogy. In alternate chapters and from the point of view of Christiaan, Lisa and Nora narrate their life during the last years of the war.

In a few words:

Christiaan was in the resistance till he was captured and sent to Mauthausen, a concentration camp, where he struggled to survive. While, Lisa at the front with General Patton’s army is caring for the wounded, Nora is interned in a concentration camp hoping to stay alive while helping those around her. As the noose begins to close around the Germans, life became dangerous for all. The physical and emotional stresses took a toll.... Too much horror and too much uncertainty....Quite a venture into a tapestry of courage, sacrifice and love...

My thoughts:

The events are based on true accounts from prisoners and survivors. The author does honors in representing them. The well-crafted chapters paint a vivid and poignant picture of what life was during the war. The dialogue is authentic and active. Mr. Reit doesn’t shy away from telling us the horrors the prisoners suffered at the hands of their captors but does this with tact. This story has a lot going on that is captivating to no end so much so I read it in two settings so eager to see what will come next and if the three heroes would manage to survive. The energy in this historical fiction is far more that I had expected. So well- said, so well- researched. Michael Reit is a powerful story teller and one of my preferred in historical fiction.

"Into the Fire", by Irene Hannon

Undaunted Courage book #1

A romantic suspense novel

This first experience reading Ms. Hannon was provided through the first reviewer program and I am glad they gave me the chance to read this wonderful story.

Arson investigator and a former smokejumper Bri Tucker, knows all about fires. When she inherits unfinished business from her predecessor she joins forces with ATF Special Agent Marc Davis to track down a serial arsonist and murderer who will stop at nothing to carry out is plan.

It took a little while to get in the swing of things, we have a lot of key players to get to know but once all of them are placed the story grabs you and doesn’t let go. This clean tale is filled with excitement and nerve-raking scenes right up to the very end. I was pinned down enjoying every word. The emotions run high especially when it comes to the arsonist and what he is up to. The investigators suspicion on who this person may be and how they can stop him is so varied I was guessing trying to picture who it might be. Curiosity and anxiety took hold till the surprise was revealed at the end. It was a big puzzle from the get-go and a very well written one. Being a romantic story we gradually have Bri and Marc developing a relationship and a wonderful ending comes out of it.

This plot is well construction and excellently written. The simple and clear narration and vividly said dialogue by well-tuned characters is a reason I can say this story is one I enjoyed immensely.

"Save her from Evil", by Melinda Woodhall

Bridget Bishop FBI book # 7

When a book by Melinda Woodhall comes my ways, I simply have to read it. This latest is as captivating as all the previous installments. The plot played by well-rounded characters is vividly said and with many twists along the way hard to see coming makes for a very exciting read. This plot moves along at a steady pace and provides much drama and suspense to grab the attention from the get-go and hold us captive till the very end. I particularly like that her narration and dialogue are clear, concise and clean most of all active, not a boring moments. Ms. Woodhall mysteries have entertained me for a long time and still do to this day.

“Save Her from Evil “, is an excellent addition to a great series

Now a tid-bit of what to expect:

After a suspected wife-killer and wanted fugitive is arrested for a brutal attack on a young woman. He refuses to talk to anyone but FBI Behavioral Analyst Bridget Bishop. When a blood-stained tarot card found at the scene reveals a disturbing link to a series of unsolved murders Bridget suspects the man in custody may be a pawn in a deadly game ......

Another winner for Ms. Woodhall

I received a free copy of this book and I leave a voluntary review, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

"The Girl in the Eagle's Talons", by Karin Smirnoff

Book # 7 in the Millennium series featuring Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist

I read the previous installments with joy and I have loved them all. The style has varied and the narration and dialogue of high quality through the years have been steady. Most of all it provided us with excitement following the attics of a high skilled hacker and her journalist friend. Steig Larson was the creator after his death David Lagercrantz took the reins and provided us the same quality we came to love. The chance then was given to Ms. Smirnoff. What a challenge this new writer has in her hands...

My thoughts on this latest is somewhat guarded since I have no idea what was going on for ½ of the book. The story is so convoluted at its best and so boring at its worst. This latest lacks flare the previous novels had and the heroine take way too long to show her face. The pacing in the part I read was slow and totally off, hard to know what was going on. What I took out it this story is in Gasskas there is a project brewing were a vast park of wind turbines will be built where the project had attracted organized crime. The style has no wits and fizz the previous installments gave us. It provides us with so much that is become difficult to keep everything straight...I gave up not wanted to waste any more time.

Definitely not the best book I read this year so far.

"Catacomb" by J. F. Penn

I am not a big fan of horror or fantasy but I make a huge exception when it comes to J.F. Penn. Not only does she write beautifully well she incorporates mystic, old customs, a bit of religious beliefs, myths, rituals and other good things in her stories. What is not to like.

In her latest she brings us deep into the catacombs of Edinburg where an ancient evil waits. Each year, the Grendsluagh, a prehistoric monster, demands a human sacrifice in exchange for the city’s prosperity. Emily is this year’s sweet meal, till her father, Walker Kane, an ex-military search and rescue officer, comes to save her. With the help of urban explorer and mythology daredevils this team of adventurers delve deep into Edinburg serpentine catacombs.....Chilling moments from then on...what an exciting read.

This stand-alone action-adventure novella (130 pages or so) is a thrill to read even with its horror sequences. This fast-paced and spellbinding story is so vividly said that one setting it took to finish this fantasy I was too absorbed with what was going on to let go. My preferred scenes are the monsters they needed to confront before reaching their target, the Grendsluagh, kill him or get kill but Emily must be saved....

“Catacomb” is a race against time and a gripping adventure.

Well-done Ms. Penn and thank you for this ARC

"The Paris Assignment", by Rhys Bowen

This historical fiction, a blend of actual events and imagination, makes us relive the harsh reality of war. This is the story of Londoner Madeleine Grant who studied at the Sorbonne in Paris, married Giles Martin and raised peacefully their son Oliver ...till the war sets off alarms in France. The story will tell us what they did to survive.

The story is written with easy and it flows beautifully. The imagery throughout steady and unwavering and gives us several twists hard to phantom. It will be difficult not to be emotionally captivated with the description of horror suffered by those caught in the hands of evil men. Ms. Bowen held back on torture but did not mince her words describing the wrong done by the Nazi but also by those who took orphans in their care. The chapters of Oliver at the orphanage in Australia were an eye opener. Although it was not the first time I read how children were abused by religious orders it nevertheless touched me...How could they?...There is a lot of tension all through, it is hard not to want them to survive and lead a happy life. The story is not all doomed and groomed we have some romance and tender moments, family reunion and budding love.

With its excellent characters and gripping plot “The Paris Assignment” is a story that will inevitably pull most historical fiction buffs in and captivate them till they reach the last page. It did for me.

"Saving Myles", by Carl Vonderau

Soon after coming home from a treatment center Myles sneaks off to Tijuana to buy drugs and is kidnapped. When the ransom call comes and the FBI can’t help, Fiona accepts help from Andre, a shady character she works for at the charity. Wade is leery of Andre but he swallows is doubts to get his son home. But now the family is enmeshed with the drug lords and money laundering enterprises... indebted to a Mexican cartel can have deadly consequences....

From the opening word I knew I would love this story. What a treat it turned out to be. This well- drawn drama is vivid, realistic and most of all tense. It explores the feelings of parents and how far they are willing to go to safe their children. Myles parents are Fiona and Wade, they beautifully express their fear and anxiety while dealing with hit men, suspicious deaths, informants and the inability of the FBI to help them. The pacing is fast and furious and so intense it is hard to put this book aside for another time. It wouldn’t be a good family drama without a boyfriend and a girlfriend to spice the experience, we also have that. In the mix add multiple murders and the result is one of those riveting and compelling novels.

“Saving Myles” gives you one of those emotional journeys hard to put down. Well-said and well-done.

"Countdown", by Lynette Eason

Extreme Measure, #4

In a few words:

Raina Price needed to escape a dangerous stalker, she change her name and disappeared. But eventually the past finally caught up with her. US marshal Vincent Corelli’s job is hunt down fugitives and protect those who are assigned to him. He vows to protect Raina at all cost and working together to solve the mystery of her past but will Raina live long enough .....

My thoughts:

Although part of a series this novel stands well on its own.

The plot is engaging enough but not as suspenseful as in the previous novels penned by Miss Eason. Nevertheless as the story unfolds we have nail-biting scenes to capture our interest and hold us captive till the conclusion. I knew Raina from the previous stories so it was not a surprise she wanted to stay low key. But when a young teenager was interviewed on TV it started a chain of dangerous and deadly events that propelled the story forward. The pacing stayed smooth sailing from then on. The story is also richly layered with just the right amount of romance: Raina and Vincent have great chemistry. It is fun to follow how they interact with each other. Although not overly done, faith in God is the catalyst that gave Raina and Vincent the opportunity to get closer to each other.

“Countdown” gives us a bit of everything: drama, excitement, romance and some suspense along with a god cast of characters. Well-done and well-said.

I received this ARC from Revel via Netgalley for my thoughts

"The Last Letter from London", by Pam Lecky

Her Secret War book #3

As the war rages MI5 agent Sarah Gillespie is tasked with handling Adeline Vermier, a double agent from Paris. Adeline’s mission is to code letter that would help the Allies defeat the Germans, in return she wants her boyfriend be rescued from Nazi occupied France. Adeline is a very volatile woman and with no reason she could double-cross MI5 leaving Sarah in a bind....When a secret mission brings them to Lisbon, they must tread carefully.....what happens next? A very captivating journey through uncertainty...

The story is filled with intrigue, deception and sadness all said in a romantic tone. The plot has a strong emphasis on Sarah’s romance and her tumultuous relationship with Tony. The pacing is steady and moves back and forth between the mission and Sarah’s romantic indecisions. As for Adeline her credibility is questionable for most part. MI5 never knew if she would turn on them and destroy all they were hoping to achieve. But her action made for good intrigue and suspense from her first appearance till we reach the conclusion. Sarah took back stage and was not the strong character I would have hoped to see. Her part a bit too subdued for my taste. Tony needed a boot to open up with his feelings but Sarah manages to give it to him by the end...haha.

I love the plot it is gripping and thrilling. It kept me on edge since it was hard to see what the outcome would be. Will the mission fall apart and thousands would die or will it succeed. In a few words: not a bad book if you are a spy lover in a ww11 setting.

Thank you Avon Books Uk and Netgalley for this ARC

"Primer", by Ty Patterson

Cutter Grogan Thrillers book # 7

The escapades by Cutter Grogan are till this day a pleasure to read even if this is the 7th , the story is fresh and exciting. I particularly like that the author not only gives us a lot of action but has a good story behind all the hunt, killings, kidnaping and the beautiful people that are key to make this series a success: my favourite of all Mr. Patterson endeavour. Over the top indeed, super hero no less and thank goodness the female players are smart not dimwit sexy objects. This book is captivating, the plot very intense and yes all players from other series join in the save Cutter from getting killed. We have all the characters in one spot how nice seeing them doing their parts.

Did I pique your interest if yes in a few works what to expect:

NYPD Gina Difiore and FBI Peyton Quindica Cutter’s closest friends came to him for help. He couldn’t refuse. As he begins, he is soon deep into a multi gang war with international ties mastering in kidnapping and human trafficking, very dangerous people to deal with. Cutter finds himself in the middle of a huge brouhaha and up the creek till his buddy Zeb Carter and his merry gang showed up to save him. Add some twists to the non-stop action and a very special girl to save make for a very exciting thriller. Well penned to give us a roller- coaster ride from start to finish.

Thank you, Mr. Patterson this story captivated it me for hours.

"Have Yourself a Deadly Little Christmas" by Vicki Delany

A Year Round Christmas Mystery book #6

Vicki Delany is giving us another cozy, witty and captivating holiday mystery with her protagonist, Merry Wilkinson, owner of Mrs. Claus’s Treasures and amateur sleuth extraordinaire.

The small-town of Rudolph, N.Y. is humming with holiday cheers and ghosts of Christmases past and future, hot chocolate and gingerbread cookie no matter the weather. The local amateur dramatic society is preparing a special musical production but rivalries between the artists threatens the production...this is not a happy set. Pressure is on and everything collapse when Paula, a member is found dead in Merry’s store...

By taking us a wild adventure to find who wanted Paula dead, this soft mystery has a lot going on to please us. First we have the preparation of the town’s Christmas Carol production with its many colourful players and the drama they bring to the table. Then we have the murder investigation done by the authorities as well as from our amateur sleuth. There are a lot of suspects and we get to know all of them. It wouldn’t be a good holiday story without pooches included, we also have them.

I read in the past some books from this author and always thought Ms. Delany had a gift of immersing her readers by giving us tidbit to munch on in order to pique our interest in finding the whodunit. I was surprise to discover who it was. She also gives us a warm feeling with her smooth style, a good story and an appealing cast of characters.

Not having read the previous book in this series did not take away from my enjoyment, this latest stands well by itself.

“Have Yourself a Deadly Little Christmas” is a relaxing read to loose ourselves in.

"Deadly Depths", by John F. Dobbyn

You need to suspend your skepticism if you want to enjoy this over the top thriller featuring former U.S. Air Force intelligence officer, Matthew Shane, now professor at Hawthorne University Law School in Massachusetts. As easy a job as one can have till his friend archeology professor Barrington Holmes was found dead in his office of what is believe to be a suicide. To avoid a scandal Matthew is asked by the university’s president to investigate. But a note left behind suggests that Holmes may have been murdered by a shadowy organisation called the Monkey’s Paw Society, a 5 member secret society bent on locating some kind of pirate treasure.....Matt sets out to find who they are and what is their end game......and the hunt is on...
The search for answer and the hidden treasure turned out to be a very complicated adventure: a professor dodging assassins, bombs, an ancient curse stretching back to the days of colonial conquest, piracy on the high seas and slave trade. One by one society members are losing their lives. ...what is happening?

While Matt’s quest takes him to beautiful and diverse locations: New Orleans, Montreal, Marseille and Jamaica we are into never ending suspense, very exciting. We have a large sidebar into Captain Henry Morgan sea activities which I took to be a bit long to read although on its own is very interesting as well as were the breath taking accounts of some famous privateers exploits and the Spanish Conquistadors. The depiction of history was active and very interesting. How true the descriptions were, probably not all of them, but told in a captivating manner nevertheless from start to finish. I mind never wavered I stay tuned till the conclusion.

The third person narrative is very well done and dynamic. The dialogue in some way seems outdated and too formal reflects well in this kind of story. We have a plot that is very imaginative and mostly entertaining. I would categorize “Deadly Deaths” as a mix between an Indiana Jones adventure and James Bond life style: fine dining, lots of money and beautiful girl....what is not to like.

"China Code", by Jeffrey E. Seay

NCIS Special Agent Ruben Carver, Book #2

Special Agent Ruben Carver new mission sends him to Shanghai to locate and neutralize a hacker who been getting classified military critical technologies. During his investigation Carver discovers a parallel operation funded by an international cabal known as The Board leaded by a dangerous woman adversary known internationally as Qu....and the fun begins.

I like this one even if I had no idea what the first books was all about I fit in right away and enjoy this very intense action suspense drama. It is a roller coaster ride from start to finish. Lots of entertaining action, gory at times but the protagonist has skills everyone can envy: he is one tough cookie. We need to pay close attention; there are many tough characters to content with, Qu and her men, the driver and all those who cross their paths. It was easy to get lost on unfamiliar names. Nicely done is the action sequence it doesn’t drag at all and easily kept me on edge and entertained. Definitely and good read.

"The Last Gunfighter of Space", by Ty Patterson

Cade Stryker Book #1

The year is 5050 AD in a far far away a planet in the Icarus Galaxy, Calara is where millions who survived the decimation of earth established themselves. But life hasn’t turned out to their liking...AI rule over them. Humans are rebelling....and then enter Cade Stryker, a thief, who trades with anyone, anywhere, sails everywhere with Andy, his ship; a kind of Andromeda....fate of humans may lie in the hands of Cade Stryker.....or not.

Full disclosure...sci-fi is by far not my favourite genre my review may reflect my feelings. I received the two books in the series from the author Zion of years ago and I put them at the bottom of my very long pile of books to read knowing this genre wasn’t for me but since it was giving in good faith and Ty Patterson has become one of my favourite authors through the years I knew I had to give this series a go and I am happy to say that Ty stopped this endeavor after writing the second book...Thank you.

In simple words: creative license indeed, imagination overboard and ridiculous encounters. It starts so so but petered out mid-way with silly fantasy elements: dried plasma to fuel the spaceship, ships with invisible hulls, give me a break... This story is complete nonsense from the first page till the very end. The characterization is totally nonappealing... Ok. I hate it but well done are Ty signature gun fights and good guy/bad guys chases that peppered the pages. Ty Patterson other series are by far a better buy....

"The Enemy Within", by John W. Mefford

A Jack Whitfield Thriller Book # 2

This is a gripping international intrigue and a winner in my books. Jack in this mission will face the world’s most notorious terrorist. Terror strikes across Europe, bombs explode at outdoor venues. Jack and his squad need to pinpoint who may be behind this....clues bring them to the Chinese Communist Party and the carnage has to end at any cost...

Being a huge fan of this author I hate to miss any of his creation. Yes creation that offers us excitement with never ending action...maybe too much but fun, fun, fun. The characters are well-define and recurring ones get better and better as new installments are added. When describing locations, the author paints vivid details pulling you into the scenes with finest. It is very hard not to push forward flipping pages to see the outcome...yes surprises await at every page. These high-speed chases around the globe will no doubts please adventure seekers. The many twists and turns are a real roller-coaster ride, Jack and his squad are continuously blindsided and almost killed by criminals...but they survive for us to enjoy their next escapade into criminality.....

Found in all of Mr. Mefford’s thrillers: exiting story filled with gun play, action characters to drive the plot, realistic narration and active dialogue (not necessary clean) and many subplots going on at the same time.

The Jack Whitfield series is very dynamic and one easy to get hooked on.

Ms. Mefford once again you outdid yourself. Thank you for the hours of enjoyment.

"Have You Seen Her". by Catherine McKenzie

Ms. McKenzie signature trade mark has been her success for years and she knows how to exploit it to maximum. In “Have You Seen Her” she keeps us in the middle of the action while taking her protagonist on a journey into her past as everything moves along she intermixes modern twists and provides us with a buffet of events to enjoy. As in her previous novel this latest is no exception to the thrill we experience.

Cassie Peter, the star player, decides to leave life in New York City to return home to Mammoth Lakes to start a new job working Search and Rescue at Yosemite National Park and reconnects with other seasonal workers. Being at the site she once worked at triggers memories of events that have been haunting her for years. Soon she crosses paths with Petal and Jada ......this encounter will turn out to be a summer that Cassie will never forget....

We have a solid narration to guide us even when the story spins around in deferent ways. The twists and turns keep teasing us to follow through, I surely love the suspense. This drama is well said and the characterization is up to par. Nicely done, Ms. McKenzie you penned a stunning thriller.

A large thank you to Atria Books and Netgalley for providing me with this ARC

"A Valuable Asset" by Chloé Archambault

Decoy series book#2

Staring with book #2 is not a problem we have enough background information to blend right in and enjoy this heart-pumping action international intrigue. Now that I read “A Valuable Asset” I may take a step back and read “The Decoy”, book#1.

The story in a few words mixed with my thoughts:

When a mission to exfiltrate a Russian hacker goes awry, Nina's cover is blown, and her father becomes the target of a Novichok attack. With her father poisoned, Nina must uncover who is after her family and why. The stakes are high and while she sets of on a mission she must navigate in a dangerous web of spies, love and assassins. Along the way we are on the edge of our seat until the very end.

No doubt, I was hooked from the opening words after all most of this thriller is set in my home town of Montréal and following Nina through the streets was a cakewalk. We find a lot of French Canadian and “Franglais” (a mixture of French and English in the same sentence) in the narration and dialogue giving us a pervading tone and mood to experience, the author does this with grace. The story flows well, easy to follow and is very fast paced with many twist and turns along the way. If you like spy thriller, with double agent, Russian spies, lots of entertaining action, some assassins and a dash of romance to soften everything you will find all of this in the riveting plot penned by Ms. Archambault.

Well said, well done.

My thanks to The Book Whisperer and Netgalley for this ARC
